The US war on terrorism is closer to the beginning than the end, the Secretary of Defence, Donald Rumsfeld, told graduates of the US Military Academy. Since the September 11 attacks on the US, the Washington-led coalition had "overthrown two vicious regimes and liberated 50 million people, disrupted terrorist cells across the globe and thwarted many terrorist attacks", Mr Rumsfeld told the 935 cadets graduating from West Point on Saturday.
"Yet despite our successes, we are closer to the beginning of this struggle with global insurgency than to its end." In Iraq "we are facing a test of wills, with an enemy that seeks to derail the Iraqi people's path to self-governance".
Mr Rumsfeld later headed back to Washington for the dedication of a World War II memorial by President George Bush. Mr Bush told an audience of ageing veterans:
"As we defended our ideals, we began to see that America is stronger when those ideals are fully implemented."
