Iceland to catch fewer whales
Wednesday, June 02, 2004
By Reuters

STOCKHOLM — Iceland has pulled back on plans to kill hundreds of whales over a two-year period Tuesday in a move hailed by conservation groups which want to see it promote the mammals as a tourist attraction.

Iceland said it would kill 25 minke whales this year as part of a scientific study, many fewer than it had originally planned, said the Ministry of Fisheries Tuesday.

Last year Iceland said it would kill 100 sei whales, 200 fin whales, and 200 minke whales over two years as part of scientific research, prompting protests from Britain and more than 20 other nations.

Now Iceland says it will extend the period over which the minkes will be caught and that it will not catch whales of the other species.

2. Good, now maybe Japan can "buy" their unused "whale credits"...

Since * wants to let bigtime polluters buy pollution credits from less polluting companies I figured the same system can be applied to the barbaric practice of whaling.

Maybe I better edit my comment before * sees it. They may use my system to "coax" Japan into sending more troops to Iraqnam.
