Bulgarian Opera Great Ghiaurov Dies at 74

SOFIA, Bulgaria (Reuters) - Bulgarian opera singer Nicolai Ghiaurov, famous for bass roles such as Don Basilio in "The Barber of Seville," and Mephistopheles in "Faust," died on Wednesday at the age of 74, Bulgaria's state opera said.

He died from a bout of pneumonia at his home in the Italian town of Modena, Hristina Angelakova, director of Bulgaria's National Opera and Ballet, told Reuters.
