Kurd Rebels Attack Turks, Ending Truce
By SELCAN HACAOGLU, Associated Press Writer

ANKARA, Turkey - Kurdish guerrillas attacked Turkish troops in the southeast Wednesday, a day after the rebels announced an end to a five-year unilateral truce, the news agency Anatolia reported.

The rebels opened fire on Turkish troops in the southeastern province of Tunceli, wounding a noncommissioned officer near the town of Ovacik, Anatolia said.

Although there has been sporadic fighting since the rebels announced a cease-fire in 1999, the attack in Ovacik were the first clashes between the rebels and soldiers since the end of the truce.

~snip~

Turkish authorities have recently complained the United States failed to act against the Kurdish rebels holed up in mountain bases in northern Iraq (news - web sites) despite promises.

1. This is very bad news...
The fighting is now spilling over into adjacent countries. We've obviously lost control over the situation in the worst way possible.

9. It was obvious last year that this was a real danger.

Turkey was squawking loudly and threatening to send their own troops into Iraq to control Kurdish areas.

"This is a major f***-up, Mr. President."

2. Oh what a tangled web we weave....
Sheesh, what a fucking moronic thing to do when we went after Iraq.

This was a bigger military blunder than Vietnam.

8. bush* massive mess...the Turks will now take a large chunk of Iraq
to merge with their already large Kurdish population...expect LOTS of bloodshed...

it's entirely OUT OF CONTROL now....beyond last weeks 'spiralling out of control'.....there is only ONE solution left: BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW !!!!

this is incomprehendably BAD....every time that I think it can't get any worse...it gets WORSE....

and bush* was again on TV today, bragging about how well things are in Iraq AND giving his usual 'happy Iraqis' song-and-dance...

10. If the Bushistas really think everything's going so well ...

why do they keep predicting a major "up-tick" in violence?

They know damn well it's a SNAFU, and they're happy about that because the worse the situation is, the longer our troops will be there and the more chance they'll have to finish building their bases.

11. We just might let them take their chunk of Iraq
We've turned our backs on the Kurds before, what's stopping us from doing it again?

12. Surely, the USA doesn't want to pull Turkey into this mess.
Or, uh,...could this be revenge for their failure to give us bases when we demanded them?

Yep. Just let those Kurdish rebels cause a big, violent fuss.

Gawd, this administration is incredibly polished at ruin.

.....another of bush*s screwups bites him in the ass.

Hey George. That light at the end of the tunnel?

It's a train.

I swear someone has the stupid pill concession at the white house.

No group of people could be that dumb naturally. They must be taking chemical enhancers.

14. Haven't been following this. WHY are the Kurds picking a fight?
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 05:41 PM by Dover
Why now? Is this just a continuation of the ongoing dispute over the ownership/use of Northern Iraq? What's up?

Israel risks Turkish accord
By Jonathan Gorvett in Istanbul

When Turkey's prime minister accused Israel of being a terrorist state last week, he was joining a growing chorus of anti-Israeli remarks from Turkish politicians.

Yet despite public outrage at the recent actions of Israeli forces, Turkey remains largely open for business with Israel, despite recent setbacks for Tel Aviv in its efforts to boost military ties with Ankara.

"Turkey's mood has definitely been turning sour towards Sharon and his actions recently," leading columnist and broadcaster Ali Birand told Aljazeera.net.

"For the first time, the government is showing very explicitly and strongly that they don't approve of what he is doing."
