British Gas Prices Top $5.79 a Gallon
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=535&ncid=535&e=10&u=/ap/20040602/ap_on_bi_ge/britain_gasoline

By THOMAS WAGNER, Associated Press Writer

LONDON - As rising oil prices pushed gasoline past $5.79 per gallon in Britain, truck drivers threatened strikes and cabbies filling up at the pumps complained about working extra hours to make ends meet.

-
In Britain, the Automobile Association said the average cost of unleaded gasoline was about $5.79 a gallon Wednesday, an increase of 14 cents from Tuesday.

But some filling stations were charging more than $6.31 per gallon for unleaded fuel and one, Total Gas in west London, was selling super unleaded for $7.93.

-
Britain's fuel taxes account for nearly three-quarters of the cost of gasoline and are among Europe's highest. The level of fuel duty for gasoline is currently $3.30 per gallon.

5. they are so absurd. I can't understand why people buy them.
I feel embarrassed to see them! I spent $22.00 to fill the tank with the lowest grade. But then I read that the Brits are paying 5 plus dollars per gallon. ( whatever that is in pounds.) I can still remember when gas was 9 cents per gallon and it going up to 17 cents was a big deal.

7. so do I
And I don't have a Hummer. With the exchange rate as it is, the price is actually more like $90.

Bummer is: Intellectually I support artificially high Gas prices: it will move the Industry away from fossil fuels earlier.
Strict environment laws have shown ironic advantages before. Good example: The European Refineries are very new, as the strict laws forced the owners to build new plants. As a result the US has to buy Gas from the EU, as the US rust buckets can't keep up with the demand (of course that is a major reason for the gas price rising faster than the oil Price).

10. Hummers and other Huge Gas-Guzzlers Get a Special Tax Break!
They've been getting rid of the tax breaks for conservation and replacing them with
energy-wasting tax credits like this one.

OPEC is a wide open target. Now that this country is more oil dependant, just one catastrophe and we might be seeing $4/gal....

8. Remember, bigger gallon
1 British Imperial gallon = 1.2 US gallons

But that's still a lotta green for gas.

9. IMHO the Article uses US Gallons
Considering that's it from a .com source (not .co.uk) and that the the liter is the normal unit in the UK nowadays.

11. Yeah, rereading the article, you're probably right.
However, it would be alot clearer if they had given the /litre price as well.

Cheers.

13. Petrol prices over here...
The media are making a big deal about the prices being over 80p/litre.

Some of the tabloids for predicting it'll go past 90p, even topping £1/litre

Not really bothered - don't have a car... too expensive!
