Russia Echoes French Concerns on Iraq Resolution
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=564&ncid=716&e=13&u=/nm/20040603/ts_nm/iraq_un_resolution_dc

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia echoed serious concerns held by France over a new U.N. resolution on Iraq (news - web sites), hours before Iraq's foreign minister pleads his country's case for full sovereignty at the Security Council Thursday.

In comments likely to further upset opponents of the U.S.-British draft, Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) said Iraq would have no veto over military operations by American-led forces after the occupation formally ends on June 30. snip

"Many of our concerns remain. Therefore the text needs serious work," Interfax quoted Yuri Fedotov, a deputy foreign minister, as saying. snip

But U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte said it needed only "fine-tuning" and that he expected it to be adopted soon. No vote has been set but most envoys expected the resolution to pass, albeit not immediately and with changes.

1. This will serve to legitimize
...the invasion and the occupation. The American policy which is a total fraud will now carry the imprimatur of the UN. If there was any doubt about whether the initial resolution authorized an invasion, UN approval of this plan for the continued occupation throws that in the trash heap of history.

2. interesting thought......
your right after the fact, accepting the troops there, accepts the occupation.......

they continue to weave deception....and you have to continually be vigilante to know if they are coming at you from this direction, you need to look behind you and find out what they aren't saying and how they are trying to trap you.....

4. This is Cheney's fait accompli approach

...there is the UN, then there is real power. I wouldn't be calling any UN reps, I wouldn't want to be accused of conducting foreign policy on my own.

This is a variation of the bandwagon approach he initially proposed. When we win, they will follow. The problem is our position in Iraq isn't a winning one. Politically, it is much weaker than it appears. Do the Europeans really think that we will leave after 2006? After November, there will be no incentive to leave.

The bushista comparisons to WWII are ludicrous. I see some similarities to the Korean conflict, there will probably be a massive and bloody repression after this thing gets signed. I can't imagine why the Russians, Germans or Chinese would sign this. It's appeasement, frankly. Do they think they can accomplish something with a piece of paper that they won't apply any leverage or resistance to, in fact?
