GOP has Soros in its sights
Edited on Thu Jun-03-04 08:28 AM by Bleachers7
June 3, 2004 -- WASHINGTON — Republicans launched an attack on billionaire financier and anti-Bush fanatic George Soros, mocking him as the "Lord of the Democrats" and outlining a plan to rip his out-of-the-mainstream views.
In a memo e-mailed to GOP congressmen and staffers, the Republican National Committee called Soros the "Daddy Warbucks" of the Democratic party and noted his support for legalizing some drugs.

The Republican lawmakers are encouraged to use "floor speeches" and other opportunities to blast Soros, who has given millions of dollars to various groups to help defeat President Bush.

Soros has said in interviews that he has concluded that ousting Bush is the most important thing he can do with his life.

The RNC memo also includes snippets of several Soros interviews and stories, including a 2002 interview where he said: "I have had these illusions, or perhaps delusions, of grandeur and they have driven me."

Screw the right-wing elitists who suck the very life out of our constitution and every admirable principle and quality upon which this country's foundation is built.

They are worse than predators, they are like a consuming disease.

It is one thing for the RNC to come out with a memo but any person that steps forward to bash Soros will certainly make themselves a target. A billionaire has lots of resources at his disposal. He could take it upon himself to target each individual one of them with campaign monies and influence.

29. Not to threadjack or anything...
but what's the deal with the mainstream media and the Bush relationship to Rev. Moon? If you had a Democrat who was anything other than mainstream Protestant, Catholic or Jewish, the media would have him on a skewer for consorting with a cult leader. Yet Bush Jr. and Bush Sr. can do the slap-and-tickle with the Unification Church and nobody seems to care.

What's the story there?

Edited on Fri Jun-04-04 12:21 AM by darkblue
All this criticism from the party that gets support from Sun Myung Moon, who believes himself to be a messiah destined to rule the entire world, has called for the extermination of homosexuals, has blamed Jews for the Holocaust, and wants to destroy individualism.

Check out this comparison between Soros and Moon done by journalist John Gorenfeld: http://www.gorenfeld.net/blog/2003/11/handy-comparison-chart-from.html

Soros represents the best of traditional Liberalism. He has much in common with John Stuart Mills.

If opposing (from personal experience in Eastern Europe) totalitarianism in favor of an open society makes him "out of the mainstream", I feel very sad for what the mainstream has become.

42. The world is full of crooks. Do you want them for us or against us?
Soros is distinguished from his fellow mega-crooks by his promotion of liberal democracy, his use of billions for social justice, and his criticism of the polluted paradigm of the "good" Christian West against the "bad" Muslim world.

But he takes with one hand while giving with the other: he has hurt people with his currency raiding. He is not to be absolved for that. Capitalism has set the table of our choices; we can hardly avoid eating because the chef is a crook.

Yes. Soros has been a mega-capitalist. But, I admire his incredible personal investment (unlike any member in this administration) in an "open society" philosophy. I have no problem accepting the assistance of a capitalist whose actions have proven his sincere compassion and interest in social justice.

To anyone interested in Sangh0's accusations, have a look at this thread and my request to lock it. Sangh0 didn't want to debate Soros' involvement in the Democratic party, so instead accuses me of anti-semitism. It's a common tactic when you want to stop a discussion.

62. read the Open Society and its Enemies by Karl Popper
Popper was Soro's teacher at the London School of Economics, they both survived the Nazis and Soros survived the communist invasion of his country. Popper's attacks on Plato puts his philosphy completely diametrically opposed to that of Leo Strauss. Soros has really put that philosophy into work around the world. Sometimes giving more money personally to a country than US foriegn aid does. Soros is definitely a good guy.

I’m not quite sure who “Daddy Warbucks” is but I do know that Cheney and Murdoch (coincidentally the owner of the NY Post) have made lots of bucks out of the recent war. Maybe someone should also point out that supporting the legalization of drugs is not half as bad as having your record of taking illegal substances expunged using daddy’s influences

34. If you listen to the TV Presentation--
especially at Fox--the whole idea is to smear the Democratic Party using Soros, Michael Moore and anyone who they can use to leave a bad impression of Democratic Party. "When the American people learn that these people are for Drug Legalization, Gay Marriage(they list the Cultural Issues" American People will not support the Democratic Party." Wedge Politics on the rampage. Since the Republicans believe they can win on the Cultural Issues, they are
using Soros Moore and others to drive a wedge between the Party and these Individuals. The added bonus is it gives them an opportunity to smear the Party and Soros.

We as a party had better not fold just because the Republicans attack us on Cultural Issues. The Republicans are worried about their own Party. Tim Curran, The Hill this AM was explaining how Republicans are trying to distance themselves from Bush and the War.
Can you believe this?? The Republicans are in charge of all 3 Branches of Government and they believe they can avoid being accountable for war. They are in trouble--Folks they want to win--so
Cultural Issues will be used big time---Katie Bar the Doors.

I will never let the repigs live down the last three years. They will always be *the enemy* in my eyes.

I will kick them when they're down. I will knock some figurative teeth down their collective throats. And I won't ever stop doing that.

Fuck 'em. They are human garbage, and should be delt with as such.

47. If he were GOP, he'd be held up as a model of success.
The guy would be at the State of the Union address next to Pickles and all that stuff.

I don't think many of us are even the slightest bit surprised by this. They knew Soros was keen on seeing Bush voted out of office.

49. Soros has given between $100k-$250k to Ralph Nader
...specifically to Nader's Public Citizen Foundation, according to figures from Soros and the WSJ. Good show, George.

Public Citizen runs the campaign funding watchdog, whitehouseforsale.org, which monitors the buying and selling of our political duopoly.

50. They are using taxpayer money to attack a private citizen for his politics
Nothing new for the GOP wasting taxpayer money on partisan politics.

Taxpayers are bankrolling much of Bush's election campaign this year.

If Bush was a Democrat, the media would be attacking him over it.

60. DADDY WARBUCKS???
Edited on Thu Jun-03-04 05:01 PM by dave29
I find their use of the word WARBUCKS hysterical. Who keeps asking for more and more War Bucks? Where does the Buck never stop, unless it's about Bucks for war?

These people know no shame. They really are proving they know close to nothing at all.

If there is a DADDY WARBUCKS at all, it is Dick Cheney. Or Poppy Bush.
Or anyone involved with Halliburton, Carlyle, or any Contractor building weapons of mass destruction.
