Powell compares Iraq war to fight against Nazis
18 minutes ago Add Politics - AFP to My Yahoo!

PARIS (AFP) - As US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) headed to Europe for celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) compared the war in Iraq (news - web sites) to the fight against Nazi Germany.

"I think we can compare the fight against the Nazis and the fight against Communism with the fight that we are now all engaged in against terrorism. And Iraq is a part of that battlefield," Powell said in an interview on France 3 television.

He said Iraq was not the only battlefield, however, citing the recent attacks in Saudi Arabia and the March 11 train bombings in Madrid, as well as the Istanbul bombings last year and the Bali blast in 2002.

"This is a new threat that we face and we have to approach it in the same way, with all of us working together, a great alliance of people who believe in peace, and freedom and the democratic process, to say to terrorists: 'You will not succeed. We will fight you'," said Powell.

13. Powell...by far
We knew what we were getting with Bush, Cheney, Rummy, etc. when they weaseled into office. But Bush got some votes from people simply because of Powell. They thought Powell would be a voice reason among the insane. Powell, therefore, has been the biggest disappointment in recent political memory. He has toed the company line every chance he gets, even when the company line goes against everything he used to publicly stand for. Rummy, Rice, Wolfowitz, Cheney, and Bush are, have been, and always will be fascist thugs...but we knew that. That makes Powell by far the worst man in the administration. We thought he might have integrity but we have been proven horribly wrong. I now hate him more than any of them.

18. Nazi comparison?
Let's see:

Who invaded Poland?

Who invaded Iraq?

Who set up (then) camps for undesirables/political prisoners?

Who set up (now) prisons for undesirables/political prisoners?

Who tortured (then) those same prisoners?

Who tortured (now) those same prisoners?

Ummmmm.....

Let me see. Yep, you're right, Powell. It is a lot like the Nazi thing. You are just comparing the apples and the oranges. Guess you'll have to go and look in that mirror again. I'm certain you felt the breeze.

20. This is their new theme to hammer
Bush's academy speech the other day said the same thing. He compared Iraq to WWII and the Cold War, and managed to invoke Reagan's (may he rot in Hell) name to boot.

Reminds me of Blazing Saddles. "You'd do it for Randolph Scott." "RANDOLPH SCOTT!? Okay sheriff, we'll support you."

23. Sad
sad to see Powell waste himself on this idiot, but apparently it is Powell's choice and he is known for self preservation no matter what he has to do.

None of them are concerned for this country. All, imo, are only concerned about their own wealth and position. This will all be gone in a few short months, they reason.

Why are we teaching our children myths about this country and teaching them to be be hones

The very persons they can look up to are the most despicable liars, and the most greedy, uncaring manipulators and con men and they are successful and they are rich and they do not have to worry about their health care or how they are going to pay for their medicines.

If we want to teach our children to be successful, I would think that Cheney is the ultimate example to hold up to our children. Should we teach them how to get rich.

Seems to me, all the rest of the stuff, like honesty , integrity and all of that, is for the little folks. If you really want to be rich and successful and some day be president, you have to be like Bush and Cheney.

<sarcasm>

Of course Im not surprised...they are desperate and this is a sad maneuver...

So its "beyond the pale" to compare Hitler and Bush, but it's ok that they compare the Iraq War debacle and WWII in which we fought an actual army that could have taken over the world.

Edited on Thu Jun-03-04 03:19 PM by dave29
I'm referring to it as the "greatest generalization"

Condi "Bush will be remembered like Churchill and Roosevelt"
Bush "War on Terror like World War II"
Powell "It's like we're fighting Nazis"

White House spin at it's worst. Thanks, Karl Rove.

Meanwhile,

Tenet resigns
Bush hires lawyer
Dems pick up two special elections in heavily Republican strongholds

and I'm not feeling so bad.

has this WWII disease. I think they skipped a couple wars in-between.

Just wait until the pukes trot out the map of North Africa in red showing the vast territories Iraq controls or controlled. I hear the Iraqi Army was ready to move south and take the entire African continent.

Followed by Europe starting with Poland.

Since * has a fondness for WWII I propose his war crimes trial be held in Nuremburg.

31. Wasn't Poland invaded by the Nazis?
Wouldn't that make the war in Iraq sort of like the war against the Nazis, at least like the wars of the French and Polish resistance against the Nazis?

Oh, wait. Powell probably meant that Iraqis defending their homeland are like the Nazis. Yeah, that is nuts.
