Keynote Speech Launches Clinton Book Tour
14 minutes ago

By HILLEL ITALIE, AP National Writer

CHICAGO - Former President Clinton (news - web sites), kicking off the year's most anticipated book tour, told the country's publishing community Thursday night that his upcoming memoir will "tell the story of my life and how my small life interwove with the American life."

The keynote speaker at BookExpo America, publishing's annual national convention, Clinton noted that as a young man he had set himself the goal of writing a great book.

"I have no earthly idea if this is a great book, but it's a pretty good story," said Clinton, whose memoir, "My Life," comes out June 22 with a first printing of 1.5 million.

No BookExpo guest in memory was so eagerly awaited as Clinton, who received a standing ovation even though he began 30 minutes behind schedule. The line for his speech formed in the late morning and extended the length of several city blocks, winding through the lobby of the McCormick Place Convention Center. The crowd was standing room only in the convention center's ballroom, which has a seating capacity of around 2,700.

3. great headline: Clinton will get all 60 of the 'Minutes'
Richard Nixon didn't rate one. Neither did Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, nor either George Bush.

So why is CBS's "60 Minutes" devoting an unprecedented full hour to former President Bill Clinton on June 20?

"To me, it was an easy call," said new "60 Minutes" executive producer Jeff Fager. "This guy just wrote 957 pages, and he's a very interesting and controversial figure. He's got a lot to say."

It will be Clinton's first interview about the eagerly awaited "My Life" (Knopf), which comes out June 22.

There will be no restrictions on lines of questioning by "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather, a "60" alum and "60 Minutes II" contributor, Fager said.

Rather did "60 Minutes II" sit-downs with Clinton when he was president in March '99 and December '00, as well as a piece for "60" in August '96, according to Fager, formerly a "60 II" exec producer.

5. Clinton is good; he's very good.
A President who can express complete thoughts in complete sentences.
A President who really understands what he is saying.

8. Wow, I was taking a nap and rolled over and turned on CSPAN,
I just about jumped out of bed when I heard Clinton's voice. I listened intently. "How can he be so positive, intelligent, engaging, and understand his place in history so clearly?" I wondered... Then I realized that my great country had been taken hostage by an ignorant, angry, simple-minded chimpanzee! How could any greater contrast ever be drawn so utterly clearly that any moron could see it. Clinton, the most brilliant and one of the best presidents ever, trying not to be too insulting as he described our current political climate and the differences (contrast) since Johnathan Ape (Bush) took over. He was hilarious when he put the current situation into historical perspective. He described a newspaper article during Lincolns Presidency where Lincoln was described as a "Baboon and he should be assassinated" - he-he - I knew what he meant :o) ! I wish Clinton could run again - he'd easily beat any other joker out there. Meanwhile we suffer with fools...

9. Just finished watching the repeat of his speech.
God he is brilliant. It is so obvious watching him that it is sheer competency that drives the repukes nuts.

We should be so lucky to ever have a president like this again. Can't wait 'til the truth about Bush and Condilizard comes out, so people can see that not only was he a lousy president, but he was also a philanderer.
