NYC Pupils Expected to Repeat Third Grade
NEW YORK - Up to 10,000 third-graders could be held back this year because they did not pass citywide reading and math exams, according to test results released by the Department of Education (news - web sites).

Even though the city spent $8 million preparing for the exams, 11,700 of the 80,000 third-graders in New York City public schools failed one or both of the tests, the department said Thursday.

Officials had predicted as many as 15,000 student would be kept in third grade for another year as part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's new policy to end "social promotion."

1. So, will you promote them from 3rd grade when they shave?
Or maybe we should just kick them out entirely?

2. Stupid
More one size fits all education policy pushed through by politicians who lack expertise.

I'm all for holding back students who don't learn anything, but it should never be because of a single test. That decision should be made upon the recommendation of the teacher and school principal on the basis of test scores, grades, behavior and evidence that the child has learned nothing at all.

The experts should be the ones making the decisions, not busybody politicians. If that makes me an elitist, fine.

4. Schools didn't do such a
terrible job of educating students until the federal Dept. of Education was formed in 1976. Leave it to the government to screw stuff up.

10. You have evidence of that ~ a link maybe
I think you are making stuff up. I think since the Dept of Education was formed a better educational system has been implemented. Much more diversity. I would say education in the US has declined since Cable TV came into existence.

11. Actually, everything began to decline after Reagan's election.

Studies clearly show that listening to him and his cohorts caused genetic damage to listeners.

8. Bingo. The standards.
Instead of teaching the children, Bush's LNCB policies force teachers to teach the test. Any child can reach his full potential with the proper instruction - individualized instruction.

Schools are not assembly lines. You can't increase a teachers "productivity" be forcing them to supervise larger numbers of students. Their success can't be measured on a standardized test.

7. Life is a series of unfair, prepared tests...
so the more better to get the kids ready to the real world, of tests that ruin your life if you fail. It happens so much that a tougher still could help our society. If you look at the final approaches of the plan, you can see it's all political hogwash, derived to grow more support from the East. I don't know how he plans to engage the rest of the company, but only time will tell, and for thousands.
