Bush names ex-Sen. Danforth as new UN ambassador
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ROME -- President Bush said Friday he had chosen former Sen. John Danforth of Missouri to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

If confirmed by the Senate, Danforth, a Republican who is a popular figure among both Republicans and Democrats, would succeed the current ambassador, John Negroponte, Bush's choice to be ambassador to Iraq.

1. Isn't Danforth another fundamentalist type?
maybe he isn't as bad as Ashcroft--but I know he was a big booster for Clarence Thomas too.

2. Yes, I believe for a while...
...he and Ashcroft were the "Senators from Missouri". Gee, now lemme think. Wasn't he involved in chairing some investigation recently? The name Waco keeps coming to mind...

3. Danforth is also one of the heirs to the..........
Ralston-Purina fortune. Also, he took a lot of heat for a while in the early 90s when he was caught wearing imported Italian-made shoes or a suit (can't remember which) while making a speech to the Senate about the evils of fewer restrictions on imported goods.

6. Not only did he nominate Thomas he held his hand and spent the
night with him throughout the Thomas/Anita Hill hearings. He's a toad. At one point recently he said he might not have supported Thomas, but that doesn't forgive his coddling of him and his influence on Biden to not allow the witness for Hill who would have prevented Thomas ever serving on the Supreme Court and might have saved us from the horrible events we are living through.

I'll say this for Bush...never has a Repug President been so loyal to everyone who has ever supported the evil side of the Party. His loyalty is overwhelming...his loyalty is disgusting. :nuke:

I remember an interview he gave after the confirmation where Danforth said that prior to Thomas giving his statement, they went into the senate bathroom and not only prayed, but sang,"Onward Chrstian Soldiers". 8. Interesting move. Bush is trying to play Mr. Uniter again.
Danforth may be a Repub but he is certainly viewed as a moderate in the Colin Powell camp. Hard right wingers will certainly be disappointed. It's like trying to reconcile with the U.N. "I know I've been bad, got drunk, and a little carried away but can't we just kiss and make up."

10. Danforth could be credited for all the 'peace' in Sudan
History of Senator John Danforth as Envoy for Peace in Sudan

The President named Senator Danforth his Envoy for Peace in Sudan on September 6, 2001.

Senator Danforth undertook two missions to Sudan and the region (in November 2001 and January 2002), and one mission (in December 2001) to consult directly with key European partners (the UK, Norway, and Italy). more.........

He was also party to the confirmation of his protege, Clarence Thomas. And he handled the investigation of Waco.

12. He was also chosen by WJC or Reno one to investigate Waco
So maybe he does have a fair reputation with those around Washington.

Who knows...

13. I believe he was a friend of Clarence's
of course, he didn't know about his true character then.

Fairly moderate, big step up from Negroponte.

15. A bandicoot would be a step up from Negroponte
Danforth is a straight ahead corproatist, probably a newish convert to neocon, and an opportunist looking to make a name for himself for future Presidential runs.
