Sources: Informant involved in border killing
A confidential informant for U.S. federal officials took part in a killing in Mexico and made an audiotape of the slaying, two sources close to the case told The Associated Press today.

The ICE informant told agents he didn't know that the slaying in Juarez last August was going to happen, one source told the AP. But once the informant realized it was going to happen, he feared he would be killed too if he didn't go along, the source said. The informant helped hold the victim down while he was suffocated with a plastic bag, the source said.

Sources said the murder is related to a federal court case involving Heriberto Santillan-Tabares, who is accused of being a high-ranking Juarez cartel member.

Santillan-Tabares was arrested Jan. 15 when he allegedly tried to enter the United States with more than 10 pounds of cocaine. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and importation of a controlled substance.
