Swedish newspaper: Pope lectures Bush.

The Pope lectures Bush

It became the shortest Papal visit in history: just 15 minutes. But illness and weakness did not hinder the Pope from giving president Bush sharp criticism.

"Don't try to come here waving a medal. I'm still saying no to the war".

St. Peter Square was virtually empty, except for several thousand police and american security forces when USA's President Bush came to the Vatican City yesterday. Cardinal Angelo Sodano escorted the guest up to the ailing Pontiff, who remained seated when the President arrived.

"You know very well the Church's unalterable position on this war," said the Pope and urged the president to quickly normalize the situaiton.

Notice the Italian demonstrator at the top of the article. Love his graffiti!

1. The BBC here showed much of the lecture
although not the "Don't come here waving medals" line. No wonder Bush looked like he'd just swallowed a fresh hairball and sat like his piles were bothering him.

2. Will this be reported in the US media?
"Don't try to come here waving a medal. I'm still saying no to the war".

Silly me.

5. I knew Pope John Paul had it in him!
and he hasn't let me down. I remember posting a few days ago that I wished I could be a bug on the wall in the Vatican when this meeting took place.

Good for you Pope John Paul II! O8)

:toast: and here is to your improving health! :D

6. I'm always amazed when I read European newspapers.
There is a huge difference between them and US newspapers. In particular, I've noticed that anything connected with Bush goes through some kind of screening process that filters out most of what he says and does (and of course, goofy photos).

I read 3 online Swedish newspapers. Many times, the news is the same as I read here on the DU. But when it comes to Bush, there's a huge crater-sized hole.

Cheers to the Pope!

The news here is so obviously skewed it isn't funny. Too bad the world and all of America doesn't know what the pope really said to *.

Cheers to the Pope is right!!! :D

8. This is exactly what an angry parent would say to admonish a child.
"Don't try to come here waving a medal. I'm still saying no to the war."

Junior got verbally spanked by the pope. Just like I knew he would! I only wish Poppy and Babs had been present.

:spank:

16. What An Angry Parent Would Say

ABSOLUTELY!!

"Don't come in here with 'Mommy I love you' and a handful of dandelions! I SAW what you did to those frogs! Now you MARCH up to your room, young man and STAY there until your FATHER comes home!!"

I don't know why, but for some reason I just envisioned this as a scene in the Beavis & Butthead cartoon:

Beavis: Heh heh...ngheh... Nice hat. I like, brought you a medal. Heh heh.

Butthead: This medal, like... sucks.

Beavis: But, heh heh, like... Jesus said, y'know... for me to make the WAR. And stuff.

Butthead: You're war's stupid, buttmuch.

Beavis: YeahYEAHYEAH! War! WAR! There was, like, FIRE! And BOMBS! And it was COOL!

Butthead: Shut up, Beavis. <SLAP!>

Beavis: I AM THE GREAT BUSHHOLIO! I AM A GRINGO! I NEED *WAR* FOR MY BUNGHOLE!

Butthead: Dumbass.

Beavis: Are you threatening me? MY BUNGHOLE WILL NOT WAIT!

11. Ruh roh. Dubya will prolly put Pope on his enemy list,...
,...'cause, you're either with him or against him, ya' know.

Soon, he'll start having delusions that the Pope is the anti-christ trying to tempt him or possess him.

13. Surely that's hyperbole? Surely

Il Papa didn't really say

"Don't try to come here waving a medal. I'm still saying no to the war"

Surely the reporter just made that up as hyperbole and paraphrase?

I would absolutely love it if John Paul II really did say it!

14. DB, I was wondering the same thing myself.
I translated the article exactly as I read it from 'Expressen' newspaper. The statement by the Pope had quotes around it. I can't believe the Swedes would just whip up a statement, as if John Paul had said it.

The Swedes aren't like that -- they're very much like the Germans, very fastidious, exact proper and all that. I can usually trust what I read over there. It really is a lot of unfiltered stuff that gets shipped out across Europes.

I'll try to see if there is anything else to back up his statement.

15. Where's the link for the "Don't try to come here waving a medal" quote?
I don't believe the pope would say that.
