Joy reverberated from Africa's Rift Valley to City Heights.

The ululating cries of happiness at a ceremony May 26 in Naivasha, Kenya, were echoed by children's cheers at the Southern Sudanese Community Center of San Diego.

After 20 years of civil war in Sudan – a war that the United Nations says has claimed between 2 million and 3 million lives – the Arab, Muslim ruling government of the North and the African, mostly Christian and animist Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) of the South signed protocols, clearing the last hurdles to peace.
