Delays, Purge Hit Voter Rolls (Florida) (TBO.com)
<snip>

TAMPA - For the second straight presidential election, Florida's law against former felons voting, a law grounded in Old South racism, may prevent thousands of people from voting.

Some of those people may be legally entitled to vote. Others won't be able to navigate the bureaucratic hurdles of the state's clemency process to get their rights restored in time for the election.

But the state government is concentrating on removing as many former felons from voting rolls as possible, even though critics charge that it risks disenfranchising some who are legally entitled to vote. Meanwhile, those critics charge, the state is dragging its feet on restoring those wrongly removed from voter rolls in 2000.

Florida is one of only seven states with laws that prevent former felons from voting unless they go through a long and sometimes difficult process of having their rights restored.

2. Doesn't the constitution give everyone the right to vote?
Not just non-felons.

9. I think the only enforcement mechanism ...

is to reduce the state's representation in proportion to its voting population.

5. Isn't Tampa really conservative?
I'm surprised they'd mention the purging of voter rolls. Much less use the phrase "Old South racism." Call me jaded.

7. Can We Still Win if they Steal Florida and Ohio?
Ohio is the home of Diebold, who's CEO has promised to "deliver" their electoral votes,
and Jeb will do anything to deliver Florida's votes to his brother again.

Without one of those states, the only likely pickups are NH and WV
for a 269-269 tie, which is almost certainly as good as a win for Bush*.

Ohio is looking more important every day.
The election will probably turn on whether we can keep Ohio from being Diebolded.

8. Actually, as things are going now in Ohio ...
not many counties are going to be able to certify e-voting for November 2004. Some use optical scan, some use punch-cards. Ken Blackwell wanted to help O'Dell deliver Ohio's electoral votes to Bush, he really did, but I don't think it's going to happen. If Kerry loses Ohio in 2004, he'll lose it as honestly as anybody ever lost with OCR and punch cards.

11. I hope you're right, Nownow.....
I did hear that they're gearing back on Diebold, but I'm not familiar with the up to date status of that controversy.

If you're correct, however, I have heard a lot of talk that there are some mighty unhappy Ohioans these days, concerning bush.

13. Drop in over at the Ohio state forum --
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 11:13 PM by nownow
There are posts about it over there, from people who are watching many more media outlets than I. I forget the exact number, but there were fewer than a dozen counties that may still use e-voting, and if they do it's probably Diebold, but that was the last I heard.

I don't think the Timken outsourcing (Canton, home of Diebold) has made very many happy Ohioans in that neck of the woods. There are plenty of Dems already in NE Ohio. SW is an armpit full of people with their heads deliberately planted up their asses, but it always was.

I will say they were almost shockingly low-key about Reagan's death at the Reds game in Cinci on Saturday night. Moment of silence, then straight into the Canadian and U.S. national anthems, and 'play ball!' And nobody booed the Canuck anthem, either. I almost fainted! I've seen crowds boo the Canbadian anthem there, so maybe the mood is turning.

15. That is soooo kewl!
I will go check out the Ohio forum....and while I'm at it, I may pop over to www.blackboxvoting.org and see what they have posted on the topic.

If we outlawed paperless, unauditable voting machines across the country before the election, you'd see junior pooping in his knickers come November!

Thanks for the heads up!

14. The Democratic Party shares the blame for recent disenfranchisement...
...through its own stupid pandering on the drug war issue.

The racist origins of laws in the 10 states (mostly southern) who permanently disenfranchise felons are important. But the real story here is how, over the past quarter century, disenfranchisement has become another tool of punishment in the drug war. These laws remain intact because the Democratic Party is no different to the Republican Party on this issue: it believes in the prison state.

Thank the Democratic Leadership Council and its Reaganesque toadies.

17. You're right, Voltaire....
And somewhere recently I read that something like one out of every 75 American males is CURRENTLY in prison.... this is a HUGE portion of our population.

The newly "privatized" prison system in this country is the MOST corrupt thing I've ever heard of. And it IS, as you mentioned, being "supported" by the influx of drug busts on petty drug charges... mostly racially motivated.

There's more than one way to disenfranchise those nasty black folks who keep voting for Dems, isn't there? But where is the NAACP??? It's been infiltrated by the wingnuts, just like the League of Women Voters, the AARP, the ACLU, and countless other organizations that formerly supported the rights of minorities and regular citizens.

The NAACP in a small southern town, that I just moved away from last August, had a very right wing black woman heading up the county organization. She was keeping a lid on everything that the NAACP was traditionally supporting. It's happened to the Dem Party Hdqtrs. in small towns, as well.... Repugs are now heading them up.

Repuke infiltrators are like cockroaches....every time you think you've destroyed them, they pop up like "magic"...out of the slimey piles of crap in the cracks in the floorboard. I'd call the Orkin man, but he's House Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives! What a blight on humanity!!!
