Chalabi Aide: 1992 Conviction Done Wrong
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A spokesman for Iraqi politician Ahmad Chalabi released a document Tuesday that suggests the former Iraqi exile's 1992 conviction for bank fraud was handled improperly.

Chalabi's name is not mentioned in the 13-year-old document, which appears to have been signed by a Jordanian judge. It could not be verified as authentic.

Chalabi's spokesman, Mithal al-Alusi, said on Tuesday that the rough document, which is not on official letterhead and carries no seals or official markings, suggests that the military court that convicted Chalabi was created improperly and ignored the true suspects in the case. The case should be retried by a civilian court, al-Alusi said.

"We thank God this dirty plot has been disclosed which was intended to hurt relations between Jordan and Iraq," al-Alusi said in a press conference at a private club in Baghdad Tuesday.

The former president of Jordan's Central Bank, Mohammed Saeed al-Nabulsi, said Chalabi has been using publicity and threats to pressure Jordan to drop the charges. Al-Nabulsi said Chalabi had been convicted in a military court and a civil court on embezzlement charges, and didn't attend either trial.
