Bush: Saddam's Pistol Now U.S. Property
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- President Bush will give Iraq's new leaders full sovereignty, billions in rebuilding aid and the protection of 138,000 U.S. troops. But it doesn't sound like they'll be getting Saddam Hussein's pistol anytime soon. It's U.S. property, Bush says.

Members of the Delta Force commando team that captured the former Iraqi leader Dec. 13 gave the pistol to Bush during a White House visit. The president keeps the gun in a small study adjoining the Oval Office.

At a news conference following the Group of Eight summit in Sea Island, Ga., a reporter asked Bush if he planned to keep it or if he would give it to Iraq's new president, Ghazi al-Yawer.

Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 06:08 PM by htuttle
The wall behind it is plastered with little pictures of Saddam he's cut out of magazines and newspapers.

He makes Laura knock before she comes down there...

Maybe the reporter shoud've asked, "why is it U.S. property"?

Dumb$hit would've scratched his head waiting for something to "pop" into his thick head.

3. I thought that several military units aided in the capture ...

Yet the Delta Force people end up with the gun (and now, the implied credit for the operation)?

8. It's U.S. property?
Really? Can I have it for a while, then? We have a receipt, right? Paid fair market value, right? If not, then I'm sure Lil George will be declaring the value of the gift -- what are the lives of 820 servicemen and women along with thousands and thousands of Iraqis worth? Sounds like Stupidhead might want to start making some estimated tax payments.

violation of the law for possessing a piece of an airplane used to attack the WTC, yet not for being in possession of evidence of a war crime?

31. I will tell you
It would be called "pistolgate" and we would spend a billion dollars to hire special prosecutors to find out when he got it and if he shot it and where he got bullets for it and if it was registered and if he killed anyone or bribed anyone.......

17. Nice example of Dubya's style:
Q: You do have now the personal gun of Saddam Hussein. Are you willing to give it to President Al-Yawer as a symbolic gift or you're keeping it?

BUSH: What she is referring to is members of a Delta team came to see me in the Oval Office and brought with me -- these were the people that Saddam Hussein, the dictator of Iraq, hiding in a hole.

And, by the way, let me remind everybody about Saddam Hussein, just in case we all forget: There were mass graves under his leadership. There were torture chambers.

Saddam Hussein, if you -- we had seven people come to my office -- perhaps the foreign press didn't receive this story.
Seven people came with a story, they had their hands cut off, because the Iraqi currency had devalued, and Saddam Hussein needed somebody to blame, so he blamed small merchants. And their hands were chopped off, their right hand.

Fortunately, a documentary filmmaker went to Baghdad and filmed these seven men. And their story was picked up around the nation, particularly in Houston, Texas, where a person named Marvin Zindler, who runs a foundation took great sympathy and flew them over and had new hands put on. The latest prosthesis were put on their hands -- were put on their arms. And their hands worked.

I remember the guy signing "God bless America" with his new hand in the Oval Office.

So this is the person -- so, needless to say, our people were thrilled to have captured him.

And in his lap were several weapons. One of them was a pistol, and they brought it to me. It's now the property of the U.S. government.

And I am grateful for their bravery. I'm also grateful that that part of the mission was accomplished for the good of the Iraqi people.
This is your area, right?

I guess the answer is, "No, Al-Yawer can't have this gun unless he pries it from my hand."

Needless to say, I wondered a bit about why "our people were thrilled to have captured" that "guy signing 'God bless America' with his new hand in the Oval Office," but then there's a lot I don't understand.
