US Plans to Release Another 650 Prisoners From Abu Ghraib on Monday
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The U.S. military plans to release another 650 prisoners from Abu Ghraib prison, center of the abuse scandal, next week, U.S. Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said Saturday. The release will take place Monday, he said. A week ago, the U.S. Army freed another 320 detainees from Abu Ghraib, the fourth major release since the scandal broke in April, which brought down the number of inmates to about 3,100.

The U.S. military has said it will hand over the prison, which was also notorious for being a torture site during Saddam Hussein's regime, to Iraqi officials in August.

After the revelations of abuse, U.S. officials said they planned to reduce the facility's population by at least half, but the military is still sending so-called "high-risk" detainees considered security risks to the prison.

One American accused in the scandal was sentenced to a year in prison for sexually humiliating detainees and taking a photo of prisoners stacked naked in a human pyramid. Three others will appear before a military judge June 21 in Baghdad.

1. Hm, more people let out?
I just posted a thread about 9 Iraqis who are now suing Titan Corporation for torture. I don't know how much they are asking for damages, but it will probably be quite a lot.

So if any of these 650 inmates have any complaints about abuse, there will be more lawsuits filed.

Consider this: the US has detained over 10,000 Iraqis, 70% to 90% of them innocent. How many of these will file for damages?

This is going to cost Titan and CACI. (sees dollar bills floating away). ......they should have known......stupid, stupid

2. Well, if we can't torture the innocent, I guess we have to let them go.

3. This is an odd cause-and-effect.
"After the revelations of abuse, U.S. officials said they planned to reduce the facility's population by at least half."

Let's see: we got caught torturing prisoners so we'll let half of them go.

Where is the logic in this? Well, there isn't any. But it seems to be confirmation that US forces imprisoned thousands of Iraqis without even probable cause, do not have enough skilled people to even establish probable cause, and have given up even trying to sort out the mess.

(And yes I know that "probable cause" is a dainty US legal concept, a concept not strong enough to survive the war on terror, but you know what I mean.)

...of America's prisons.

Most of them are in there for petty, non-violent offenses.

5. I would like to believe
if they hand over all the prison complex to the Iraqi people, they will send HOMe the troops that are there, like Michael.
Bring the troops home.
Those people in that prison should have never been there
in the first place.
None of this ever needed to happen.
Lets frog march those bastards OUt of Our White House.
