Saudi builds women a city
Saudi builds women a city
12/06/2004 20:09 - (SA)

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Saudi authorities have approved the establishment of an all-women industrial city that will host training centres and employ approximately 10 000 women at more than 80 factories, the city's main investor said on Saturday.

Hessa Aloun, who runs an investment company and is also a member of the Jiddah Chamber of Commerce, told reporters that a Chinese and a Malaysian company have already signed agreements to start training programmes that will kick off in early 2005.

"I wanted to have a place where there would be training centres for women, next to factories and companies - a full-fledged industrial city for women," said Aloun, who has been lobbying for the city for four years.

The city will be built about 10km from the centre of the Red Sea port city of Jiddah, close enough so that families won't mind the women going out of the city for work, Aloun said....Cont'd >>

7. I agree. It's too easy and not very thoughtful regarding the topic
although I do it myself when a desire for "cleverness" trumps real thought.

3. I think it'll be rather like the male factory towns in SA
The pay will probably be close. What remains to be seen is whether they will have males come in and dictate everything, control it all instead of having perfectly capable female engineers and trained businesswomen do the job.

6. The article says women will hold all level positions, so I don't think
there will be a male presence.

8. IF it is completely under the control of women, I'll bet they kick ass!!!
:bounce:

Of course, I doubt it will be.

Nevertheless, the proposal of that kind of "woman thing" seems pretty cool to me.
