Southern Baptists Reject School Pullout
INDIANAPOLIS - The Southern Baptist Convention voted down a controversial proposal Wednesday that would have asked parents to pull their children from public schools in favor of religious education. On the final day of the denomination's annual meeting, some 8,500 church representatives also approved a call to amend the U.S. Constitution to bar gay marriage. The 16.3 million-member SBC is the nation's largest Protestant body.

Earlier this year, a statement denouncing "government schools" as "officially Godless" had been proposed by retired Air Force General T.C. Pinckney of Alexdandria, Va., and attorney Bruce Shortt of Spring, Texas.

The meeting's resolutions committee rejected that in favor of a broader and less pointed warning against "the cultural drift in our nation toward secularism."

Pinckney took the floor to move a briefer amendment encouraging parents to provide their children "a thoroughly Christian education" through private day schools or home schooling. That was defeated that by a show of hands after the most spirited debate of the meeting.

2. Baptists, please pull out of this Planet.
Some of us are beyond tired of being told by you that every waking and sleeping action is the Road To Hell. Put your money where your self-righteous mouths are; withdraw from this world completely and have no further contact with it. PLEASE.

3. I concur, I wish the rapture would happen, get rid of these hate
filled, war mongering parasites on the world. We could go about our business of trying to live in harmony, god-free and equal.

5. Is there any land left that is totally uninhabited? That
would be a good place for them to start their own state or country.
They simply can't see that what they do and what they say is so unChristian. God must have two personalities. One good, One bad. One is of fire and brimstone, the other a loving god.

8. Put them on a reservation

They don't want to spend their own money educating their children in the doctrine they want them to have---they want to force your children to have their religious doctrine shoved down your children's throats. They talk a good game, but in the end, they're selfish and self centered.

This country was grounded in secularism--it's what's allowed their mindset to flourish. No where is it written that Southern Baptist Christianity is the official brand of xtianity endorsed by the constitution of this country.

When a brand can be agreed upon, that is when they can force ideology in the schools. Til that day comes, the system runs best on a secular base.

7. As someone who was born and raised southern baptist
I find this extremely frightening. I think I join ranks with Jimmy Carter these days in saying I just don't fit in with these self-righteous, pious, hypocritical assholes. When something gains this much power, it's only a matter of time before it self-destructs, causing a split...who knows where that split may fall and what will come of it, but it's only a matter of time. This happened to the Pharasees and alot of these people have very "pharaseeic" behavior.

Sad...so sad that they do such racist work through the name of Jesus, who was totally against what they are pushing. It's not about Jesus, it's about greed and fear.

13. I posted the same sentiment yesterday
I'll be glad when their annual convention is over. No more stupid headlines for a while. I grew up Baptist, went to a Baptist college and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. And then the denomination flat out LEFT me. Sort of a "Zell Miller" in reverse. Very sad for me.

16. "the cultural drift in our nation toward secularism." also correct
I think the first amendment to the Constitution requires that.
