Reagan's Family Criticizes Use Of Reagan In Anti-Kerry Ad
Family Says Group Does Not Have Permission To Use Reagan's Image

POSTED: 10:28 am EDT June 16, 2004
WASHINGTON -- Ronald Reagan's family is criticizing the use of the late president's image in a conservative political ad endorsing President George W. Bush.

The ad comparing Bush's war on terror with Reagan's battle against communism is being run by the conservative interest groupClub for Growth starting Wednesday. It shows footage of Reagan at the Berlin Wall, and Bush at ground zero. The ad also said Democratic presidential contender John Kerry was "wrong then, wrong now" on national security.

A Reagan family spokeswoman said the group does not have permission to use Reagan's image in the ad because doing so implies his endorsement.

Club for Growth said it wants to show how similar Bush and Reagan have been "in terms of fighting evil." A Kerry spokesman said it's "pretty sad" that Bush supporters are already politicizing the nation's farewell to Reagan.

1. One of the bigger ironies of this...
...is that Bush is 'fighting' the very groups that Reagan created to 'defeat Communism'.

11. That's an EXCELLENT point!
I swear, this administration's penchant for comparing it's decisions to other leaders NEVER survies the first encounter with the truth!

I love the Irony. Let's compare a man who ended the cold war with the same guy that threw it into the microwave and warmed it all back up!

25. Close, but no cigar...
Mr. Reagan perhaps hastened the demise of the SOviet Union by out-spending them to death, but he almost broke us as well. If they had been just a little more successful at fooling us that their rusting heaps of parts in flooded missle silos were operable weapons, we may have gone bust as well.

The Regan administration nearly tripled the national debt and shrubby 1 spent like there was no tomorrow. The Soviet Union most likely would have collapsed under it's own weight in any case, saying that Mr. Regan ended the Cold War is just slightly more accurate than saying I'm a genius if I win a cake by ending up standing in the right place when the music stops.

The family asked for this by making the funeral a
Bush love fest.

They could make their feelings known by doing a spot for Kerry.

27. Nancy always was a little over the top
and a little overly dramatic .

She wanted it this way, thinking, perhaps, in her pathetic old and bent over age, complete with all of her pathetic bo- toxed, weird looking alien type face, that was truly bizarre for a woman in her eighties, would forever emboss her and her husband's exclusive historical image as the young survivors.

Compare to Rosylyn and Jimmy Carter. Two real human beings who accept life the way it is.

everyone involved w/this administration.

i've been subconsciously distancing these people from the GOP for some time now; i don't approve of any republicans, but this gang is an entity unto itself.

CAN we ever rid ourselves of them?

when the repugs started planning to use his image for the benefit of the party. Nancy will not stand for this and she really doesn't like the shrub at all.

18. I just thought of something. How long did it take to produce
the ad?

They had to have been planning this before the burial--maybe when they heard he was about to die!

How perfectly awful!

Nancy Reagan must be angry. She certainly has every right to be.

19. Look for many polls on this question
and I'll bet they all come out like these: lopsided majorities against Bush for exploiting Nancy Reagan less than a week after her husbands death. Hows that for family values?

24. Love the Free Republic response -
They know Reagan better than his own family, apparently.

And they feelentitled to use him because it's in the "public domain" - which might be true, but they don't even have the decency to take into consideration the feelings of the mourning family.

What freaking pigs.
