Hopes for 2005 Federal Budget Deal Fading

Tue Jun 15, 7:58 PM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hopes for a 2005 budget deal faded on Tuesday after a top Republican admitted he was running out of options for reaching a deal within his party, which is at odds over the record fiscal shortfall.

Senate budget discussions have dragged on for months as Republican leaders have tried to persuade four moderates in their party to drop a push for spending limits to rein in the growing budget deficit.<snip>

Failure to get a budget deal is a headache for Republicans ahead of the November elections.

It could make it harder to make permanent tax cuts at the heart of President Bush's economic plan and it would force an embarrassing debate on raising the $7.384-trillion limit on the nation's debt for the third time in three years. <snip>

5. There is nothing funny...
...about the federal debt. It poses more of danger to the majority of US citizens than all the terrorists in the world combined. The interest payments, the effect on inflation, the opportunity cost of all the wasted pork; the debt is a disaster in waiting that merits serious attention... now.

6. C_L, you are absolutely right, but......

I'm afraid that to most of the masses of americans the national debt is meaningless. Not only can't they think in numbers that large (hell, who can?), they have no idea how it effects their daily lives and don't care to put out the energy to educate themselves.

I am fast coming to the conclusion that we will deserve everything that happens to this country in the next few years. Without an educated electorate democracy is impossible.
