Foul Play Suspected After Man Washes Ashore Tied To Sons

POSTED: 6:33 am EDT June 21, 2004

PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. -- Police in Pleasant Prairie have identified three bound bodies that washed up on the shore of Lake Michigan Saturday.

They're investigating the case as a homicide.

Kevin Amde, 45, and his two young sons were reported missing from Chicago in mid-May.

BODIES WASH ASHORE

Police Chief Brian Wagner said all three were fully clothed.

But they haven't released the cause of death, and said there's no evidence of trauma to any of them.

Authorities said sand-filled plastic bags tied to the bodies and sand in one child's pants pockets added 48 pounds of weight.

The two boys were 3 and 6 years old.

2. they're investigating the case as a homicide...
and as heinous as that is, i'd really like to believe that it WAS a homicide and that this guy didn't strap his kids to himself and...no, i won't even think it.

4. That would be homicide too
just by the father while he was committing suicide. I really don't see how this can be anything but 'foul play' - this couldn't have happened by accident, and you can't say a 3 year old agrees to commit suicide.

3. "added 48 pounds of weight"
I just watched Man Bites Dog and this piece of data in the story made me cringe ... mostly because my first thought was "that's not enough extra weight, children's bones are porous!"

13. re: Man Bites Dog
great movie, no? I read about it online as being one of the most offensive movies ever made, and then lo and behold within the next week or so the IFC showed it and i caught about 75% of it. I woudln't say it's the most offensive movie ever made, but it is certainly odd and quite good.

5. This is so sad I could almost cry.
Who would harm babies like that?
If someone killed all three of them, could you imagine the terror in those final moments knowing what was going to happen?

My heart goes out the loved ones left behind.

7. When it's a case that does not many any sense, drugs usually
come into play. You have a good point.

10. related article: Wis. lake deaths called homicides
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-wisc21.html

excerpt:

Amde, 45, and his sons were last seen May 6. Veronica Amde reported her husband missing May 11.

Sgt. Stephanie Stewart of Chicago Police Area 4 said the wife told her Kevin Amde, with Tesla, went to pick up DaVinci from school. When they did not return, she assumed he had taken them on an outing, Stewart said.

"It wasn't unusual for the father to take the children on excursions, such as fishing trips" or to Chicago museums, Stewart said. "He was a very loving father."

Amde had no car but was said to be familiar with public transportation.

<snip>

Nancy Olivo, a neighbor who lives in the same apartment building in the 3700 block of West Division, said she was told Kevin Amde recently lost a job in day labor, and his wife was surprised her husband left so suddenly.

"She went to work. That's what she told me. And when she came back, her husband and the two kids are gone," Olivo said. "He took the rent money. He took her $675 for rent and took her two kids without clothes or nothing.

This is a tragic tale.

14. The article I posted doesn't state
whether the money ($675) was still in his wallet when he was found - perhaps he was going to go pay the rent (was it late?) and someone mugged him and killed them all for the money?
