Irish Lawyers Call for Protests Against Bush Visit
DUBLIN (Reuters) - A group of leading Irish lawyers urged people on Monday to demonstrate against George W. Bush when he visits Ireland later this week, calling the U.S. president's trip an "election prop."

"The issue is that Bush is coming here to use Ireland as a photo opportunity for his re-election -- the Irish people need to do something about that," Giollaiosa O Lideadha, one of 176 lawyers who signed a "statement of objection" to Bush's Iraq (news - web sites) policies, told reporters.

Traditionally, U.S. presidents are feted when in Ireland but the Iraq war and the Irish government's decision to allow U.S. military jets to refuel at Shannon airport have provoked strong opposition to Bush's stopover for an EU-U.S. summit on June 26.

Organizers say they expect up to 50,000 people to take part in the protests.

3. Oh, I have every confidence the Irish will come through.
This has been brewing for some time (no pun intended). Mr. Elective War is NOT going to be popular in the Emerald Isle. Remember how they had to keep the demonstrators away from him and Blair when they met in Northern Ireland? This ought to be even more dramatic.

And I've got to say it:

Remember how affectionately and enthusiastically the Irish received Bill Clinton?

Of course, the corporate media will try desperately to ignore all this, and they are too busy attacking Clinton to remember the way the Irish received him in years past.

<< WHEN BUSH COMES TO SHOVE- AN ANTI-WAR GIG
When Bush Comes to Shove gig now to take place in Vicar St on Sat June 19th- Second night also in Vicar St- Sunday June 20th
The Irish Anti-War Movement today announced that the anti-war gig When Bush Comes to Shove with Christy Moore and Damien Rice due to take to place in the Point Depot this Saturday June 19th has been moved to Vicar St.

The IAWM wishes to apologise to ticket-holders for the inconvenience caused. This decision was forced upon the Irish Anti War Movement because of the decision of the BCI to ban radio adds for the concert. This is part of a concerted attempt by the government to stop any activities related to building protests against Bush. >>

9. Lawyers call for arrest of Bush
172 members of the legal profession have signed a statement of objection to the visit of George Bush to Ireland next weekend - and called for him to be arrested.

The lawyers are calling on Irish people to demonstrate their opposition to the US president's policies in Iraq.

They are also calling on the gardaí to arrest George W Bush.

Barrister Gillíosa Ó Lideadha said: "We request that the Taoiseach be subjected to serious and sustained public examination as to why he has no apparent intention to inform President Bush clearly and publicly that the war against Iraq was unlawful and a recipe for the escalating cycle of violence."

10. Religious groups join opposition to Bush visit
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 02:57 PM by struggle4progress
Christian, Buddhist and Muslim representatives have become the latest group to express their opposition to the visit of US President George W Bush next weekend.

The religious groups are due to outline their reasons for opposing the visit at a press conference organised by the NGO Peace Alliance today.

Speaking ahead of the conference, Brendan Butler, the co-ordinator of the alliance, said Mr Bush’s trip to Ireland was a PR stunt designed to woo Irish-American voters ahead of his re-election campaign.

IRISH STICK IT UP THE AMERICAN WAR MACHINE

1.That we oppose the military assault on Iraq by the USA and it's allies.

2. That we oppose the anti-Islamic racism arising out of the current war drive.

3. We also call for a halt on attacks on civil liberties and the right to protest under the guise of the "war on terrorism".

4. We seek justice for the Palestinian people.

5. We seek to develop peaceful alternatives to war to address the reasons for injustice and conflict in the world.

6. We seek an end to the use of Irish airports and airspace by the US military and oppose any Irish involvement in a war on Iraq.

IRISH HEARTBEAT LYRICS

Oh won’t you stay
Stay a while with your own ones
Don’t ever stray
Stray so far from your own ones
’cause the world is so cold
Dont care nothing for your soul
That you share with your own ones

Don’t rush away
Rush away from your own ones
Just one more day
One more day with your own ones
’cause the world is so cold
Don’t care nothing bout your soul
That you share with your own ones

There’s a stranger
And he’s standing at your door
Might be your best friend, might be your brother
You may never know

I’m going back
Going back to my own ones
Come back to talk
Talk a while with my own ones
’cause the world is so cold
Don’t care nothing ’bout your soul
You share with your own ones

Oh won’t you stay
One more day with your own ones
Don’t rush away
Rush away from your own ones
This old world is so cold,
Don’t care nothing for your soul
You share with your own ones

17. Top Irish Lawyers Condemn Bush's 'Electioneering' Visit
<snip>
Senior counsel Brendan Nix said: “The least that can be said is that President Bush is personally responsible for creating the circumstances and climate within which the horrific torture of Iraqi prisoners took place.

“I find the thought that President Bush will use Ireland to get re-elected very disturbing.”
