Ryan 'reassessing' bid

June 24, 2004

BY LYNN SWEET WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

WASHINGTON—-Beleaguered Senate Republican candidate Jack Ryan is considering quitting the race in the uproar touched off by the release of his divorce records, a Republican source told the Chicago Sun- Times on Thursday.

"He’s reassessing," the source said. Ryan canceled a trip to Washington today where he had planned to appear with Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.) and attend a fund raiser headlined by Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), the chairman of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Another fund raiser that had been set for this morning with House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was also canceled when Hastert had a meeting at the White House. That cancellation contributed to the perception that the Ryan campaign was facing opposition from one of the top political leaders in the state.

The source said that Ryan was particularly concerned that the "tabloids are going after" Jeri Lynn Ryan, his former wife who alleged that Ryan brought her to sex clubs when they were married. Jeri Ryan is a television actress known for her roles on "Star Trek" and "Boston Public."

2. Uh, NO Dumbass
Tabloids are going after your kinky perverted famiily values ass. Ms. Ryan isn't the target, but merely the "victim" of your closeted perversion.

4. They want to interview her
not rip her up. If I were Jeri Ryan, I'd give the exclusive to Playboy and that would be that.

He's "concerned" that the tabloids are going after Jeri. Uh, I think he's more concerned for his political future.

What a sleazebag. He should stay in the race. After all, he said he didn't break any of the 10 commandments. That's all that matters to these fundies.

5. Ain't it just too damned ironic...
that Ryan is asserting his right to privacy on the matter of his wanting to have sex in public?

9. Sort of a contradiction
in terms, isn't it? Wanting privacy for trying to commit a PUBLIC sex act with his wife? What's wrong with this picture? And this is the party of "Family Values", folks!

13. Not Much Of A Contradiction
As wanting "privacy" after having some guy follow Obama with a camera all day, even when he takes a leak :eyes:

21. Ryan's stalker on Obama even crowds in close to listen to his phone calls.
He ran a STUPID campaign. No respect for his opponent, indulged in bullying, intimidation.

I hope we're hearing the last of this Republican clown.

7. Beaker, NOTHING will be bad news for Obama...
1. Even if he were a weak candidate, he'd ride Kerry's coattails to the Senate.

2. Not only is he not weak, he is the absolute BEST candidate that this state has ever seen. And I'm including Paul Simon and Paul Douglas and Adlai Stevenson.

3. Edgar has his own baggage that won't stand up to scrutiny. Some funky legislation that benefited Kemper in his last days in office, Kemper then closing Illinois operations, and some Kemper money that found it's way to Edgar when he was out of office. He ain't running.

4. See the Illinois folder for other possibilities...

14. sounds like he was running so weak, GOP bigwigs decided to ax him
and that led to the sudden release of the divorce papers. Those were court ordered sealed documents and usually when a child is involved it is very difficult to get them unsealed. Some extraordinary measures were taken to drive him out of the race.

17. that's my feeling on it too
GOP in Illinois is desparate. Ryan has not been doing well. This is what they needed to get him off the ballot. Unfair? You bet. He won the repube primary in Illinois. I'm not sure what Illinois law says. Anyone know? I'm committed to stopping this. I'd like to find out what the rule of law is. The pukes should not be allowed to weasle out of this candidate. They chose him.

19. Topinka is the only real Republican in office at the moment
IL GOP are kicking themselves that they didn't put her up for the Governor. I don't think she would go to the Senate though.

22. Edgar could be trouble.
I think he could win.

He is a very popular former governor, and fairly moderate.

Hell, I even voted to reelect the guy.

Topinka could also be a problem.

Obama, of course gets my vote in November no matter what.
