Ryan Cancels D.C. Trip

Illinois Senate Candidate Begins to Reasses Campaign

Thursday, Jun. 24; 02:12pm

Besieged by negative headlines and editorials, embattled Illinois Senate candidate Jack Ryan (R) cancelled a trip to Washington, D.C., today as he begins to reassess whether he can continue his campaign in the wake of damaging allegations from a previously sealed divorce file that was made public this week.

Ryan had planned to appear at a morning event showcasing the support of retiring Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.), the man he hopes to succeed, and to attend a noon luncheon with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman George Allen (Va.), who has stood firmly behind the nominee despite calls from some Republicans for him to exit the race.

But the trip was scrapped at the last minute, sources said, with Ryan choosing to stay in Chicago to huddle with his advisers. “The tone seemed to have changed within the campaign,” said one GOP source in Washington. “Now it seems that they’re kind of reassessing the coverage that they’re getting and where they stand on a day-to-day basis.”

Earlier in the week, Ryan canceled a breakfast fundraiser that had been scheduled for this morning, after Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) pulled out of his appearance because the event conflicted with a meeting at the White House. A Ryan spokeswoman told The Associated Press on Thursday that the trip was not cancelled because Ryan is rethinking his candidacy, and she maintained that the nominee is staying put.

2. well, obviously the decision has been made for him
He's going to step down, and either friday or saturday a statement will come out saying that he's not going to run to "spare his ex-wife the pain of all this tabloid attention" or something.

9. Either way, I believe Obama will win in November
The other Republican candidates were miserable and nobody gave two shits about them. He was the only one with a modicum of charisma. If Ryan stays in the race, the press will be merciless on him (the Chicago press already has been). If he drops out, Obama will have a clear advantage over any candidate they pick, seeing as they have no Republican superstars in Illinois at the moment, particularly one that can take Chicago votes away from Obama.

11. Just hope that Edgar doesn't get in the race.
Because I think he could win.

He is a very popular former governor, and fairly moderate.

Hell, I even voted to reelect the guy.

Obama, of course gets my vote in November no matter what.
