Claycomo to benefit from Ohio job cuts

Ford Motor Co.'s plan to close an Ohio plant will shift more production of the automaker's compact sport-utility vehicles to Claycomo in 2005.

Ford said Thursday that it would close its Lorain assembly plant in late 2005. About 1,200 jobs will be cut, the Associated Press reported. Econoline van production will be moved to Ford's plant in nearby Avon Lake, Ohio, in January 2006.

The Avon Lake facility currently makes the Escape SUV and will begin building the Mariner, the Mercury version of the Escape, this fall. But the plant will end production of those vehicles in August 2005, said Rich Voytowich, a Ford spokesman.
