Tampa (and Miami) awarded federal grant to help fight violent crime

TAMPA - The attorney general has named Tampa one of 15 cities to receive federal help in reducing crime.

Thursday, local authorities announced the goal of the initiative, called VCIT. The Violent Crime Impact Team will work closely with the U.S. attorney's office and the state attorney's office to arrest the most violent offenders in Tampa.

"Through VCIT we are going to equip Tampa Police Department with advanced tools, training, and information, helping them to work smarter," ATF special agent John Ryan stated.

Attorney General John Ashcroft believes the teams will make cities safer.

Tampa was chosen because of its relatively high homicide and violent crime rates.

1. Good article
This is about November. Tampa/Hillsborough County is going to be the single most fought-over electorate in the state, and by extension the nation for the presidential. BC '04 plays hardball and they are delivering the bacon heavily now in order to sway swing voting Tampans.

2. that is what I was thinking too . . .They are sending in the Feds
just in time for the election. Bastards.

Miami was the hot spot in 2000, and I suppose they are expecting Hillsborough to be bad this time around. They are claiming that crime is relatively high in both of these spots. So they are beefing up the thug army in time to put down any insurrection at the polls.

I heard this on the radio this AM and looked for a news story. So far nobody here is getting the significance of it. They just say aren't the Feds nice to come and help us with our awful crime wave.

Sometimes I hate living in FL.

:scared:
