Rumors fly of military draft
http://www.startribune.com/stories/1557/4844069.html

**skip**

The rumors have been sparked by debate in Congress and what some say is suspicious behavior by the Selective Service System. The fears have been exacerbated by news reports about troops stretched thin around the globe and the Pentagon's recent "stop-gap" order to extend tours of duty in Iraq.

Officials are finding the rumors difficult to quash. Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., called the draft worries "a scare tactic." Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., attributes them to people "who like to stir up fear and angst."

**skip**

The Web postings and e-mails -- often containing identical language -- usually cite the bills and the draft board openings as evidence that a draft is coming.

The warnings contain questionable assertions. For example, they claim that the Selective Service System received an additional $28 million from Congress in fiscal 2004, when there was no funding increase. They also claim that the White House is pushing to get the bills through, when in fact the administration opposes a draft.

There you have it-no draft is planned, it's just another Internet rumor. Silly us.

6. Every time I read this screed I think that either he is nuts or I am nuts.
It reminds me of "destroying the village in order to save it."

Unfornately, my a**hole congressman, also famous for being a "liberal," is a co-sponsor.

4. So suppose your on stop loss or a ready reserve.
What the hell are you supposed to think?

Are we planning on pulling out of Iraq in 6 months? Is there even a glimmer of hope that the UN or NATO wants this hot potato thrown in their lap? I think not!

These GOP A-holes had better get a grip on reality pretty quick or they are going to be faced with a troop revolt. And when they are I'm sure they will try to blame it on liberals or some such nonsense. We need to feed these chickenhawks to the lions.

A draft will make this stupid, criminal colonial war even more popular.
And lets have a fasicist state while we are at it.

8. That's their MO
If you first accuse your accuser of the behavior you are doing, it disarms them and makes the accusation harder to stick. I'm sure some psychology experts could name this technique as well as the "call it black when its white" (Clean Skies) technique they use. Its lies and manipulation all the way...

12. we wouldn't need a draft if all these c*cksucker freepers
would walk the walk and sign up.

however, it is fun to send emails to college republican chapter officers and taunt them about getting drafted. especially since this draft will have no education deferments.

13. Somebody's really upset by this "rumor":

repeated press efforts to turn the firehoses on it.

June 17, 2004
<snip>
According to the Internet Web site www.sss.gov, officials at the Pentagon have begun a campaign to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide and $28 million has been added to the Selective Service System budget.\
(Emile) Milne (press secretary and legislative director for Rangel) said this action has nothing to do with reinstating the draft and is not responding to a particular call. The Selective Service Agency has to remain prepared to manage a draft and this update is routine and nothing new, he said.

Tuesday 8th June 2004 :
Actions Indicate Administration Has Plan To Reinstate Military Draft if Bush Re-Elected
A military draft may be reinstated by mid-2005 if President George W. Bush is re-elected in November. An appropriation of $28 million has been provided in the current defense budget to bring the nation’s Selective Service System up to speed, which many people believe will likely lead to a national draft of young men and women by June 15, 2005.
U.S. military professionals have told American Free Press that due to the Iraq war and large troop deployments in Korea and Europe, a manpower shortage in the armed forces has reached “a state of critical mass.”
<snip>
The Pentagon has begun a program to fill 10,350 local draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board posts as soon as possible.
Last September, the Pentagon ran an ad for volunteers to fill the slots. But when it was reported in the news media, the ad was quietly pulled.
