Greece to Add Elevator to Acropolis in Time for Olympics
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - A temporary elevator will help visitors unable to climb steps reach the Acropolis - the first such alteration in the ancient site's 2,500-year history, the culture ministry said Friday.
The influential Central Archaeological Council agreed to build an elevator lift on the northern side of the Acropolis in time for the Aug. 13-29 Olympics and subsequent Paralympics, the culture ministry said in a statement. No specific completion date was given.

"It is a solution that respects the character of the monument," the statement said.

The council also will seek international bids for construction of a permanent wheelchair access to the monument.

1. There's just something so wrong about that...
So let's build restrooms in the middle of the Stonehenge circle, and put a McDonalds in the Taj Majal!

2. They aren't building an elevator on the ancient ruin
Just one up the very steep climb to the ruin (one I climbed and that is not handicap acessable). If they build a tasteful and low-key elevator along the mountain than that would be great so more people will git a chance to see history up close. It's a good move in my opinion.

3. There is a mcdonalds near the taj mahal
if I remember reading correctly from Fast Food Nation. I believe it was the first-drive thru of its kind in India.

Also, there's a McDonalds less than a mile away from some Concentration Camp in Europe...how.....respectful :not:

4. I'm very glad about this.
I visited the Acropolis with my mother at a time when she was still in fairly good health. But at age 80, she was unable to make the climb to the top. I left her (at her insistence) at the first stopping place, and she made her way back down alone. We never got to share the experience, which I deeply regret still.

Many elderly people make this trip and it's very sad when they, and younger disabled people cannot see this great wonder.
