Bush faces a hostile reception in Ireland
Bush faces a hostile reception in Ireland

Antiwar protests expected to cloud U.S.-EU summit

ENNIS, Ireland President George W. Bush was set to arrive at the heavily guarded Dromoland Castle in County Clare on Friday night as the authorities braced for what were expected to be large demonstrations across Ireland against the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

In contrast to the jubilant welcomes accorded to Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy, Bush's reception was already developing as frosty, if not outright hostile. Widespread opposition to the Iraq war and revulsion at the Abu Ghraib prison scandal have turned a large portion of Irish popular opinion against him.

Big protests were expected in Dublin and in Shannon, where Air Force One was to land before Bush headed to the EU-U.S. summit at Dromoland Castle. Smaller protests were expected for the cities of Galway, Sligo, Waterford and Tralee in County Kerry.

"Fury and fear as town is turned into a fortress," said the headline in the Irish Examiner. The newspaper quoted the mayor of Shannon as saying that the town's residents were being made into potential targets for a terrorist attack.

made even more interesting the fact that Bush identifies more the Protestants than the Irish Catholics.....hmmm he should be received well especially in the Northern parts of Ireland.

15. I just posted this in GD
"On the possibility of the protestors being prevented from entering Shannon, Anti-War Ireland says: “For the guards to prevent a peaceful protest from going ahead would amount to a serious breach of our civil liberties, and would be unacceptable. It would also be ironic, given that Bush expects to be applauded by our government for supposedly restoring democracy and civil liberties to the people of Iraq at the very moment ours are being threatened. At this point in time, we have no reason to believe that the protest will be banned."

The Irish actually stand up for their rights.

And they sure as h-e-double hockey sticks won't give them up for that blue-blood descendant of King Charles:

http://just-the-facts.fws1.com/Bush.htm

"Bush is closely related to every European monarch on and off the throne including the King of Albania--and has kinship with every member of Britain's royal family, the House of Windsor.

He is the 13th cousin of Britain's Queen Mother, and of her daughter Queen Elizabeth, and is a 13th cousin once removed of the heir to the throne, Prince Charles. Bush's family tree can be documented as far back as the early 15th century. He has a direct descent from Henry III and from Henry VIII's sister Mary Tudor, who was also the wife of Louis XI of France.

He is also descended from Charles II of England."

13. Bush brings peace to Ireland ...

Finally, Catholics and Protestants have found something they can agree on. They both hate BUSH even more.

So for a brief period, they can stop throwing bottles and stones at each other and start throwing them at BUSH.

Perhaps Bush could move to Ireland after his userping ass is deposed. That way, the Irish will be united in expelling HIM like the Iraqis are united in trying expell our troops now.

17. You'd expect hostility from a nation
that is mostly Islamic, but he has it coming from Christians now!

I heard today that US approval in the Middle East is down to single digits. How can that possibly make us safer?

20. "Arrest Bush" Sign Spotted in Crowd
It's actually prominently displayed on the 3rd page of my local newspaper. Unfortunately, it's not on the front page, but you take what you can get nowadays. Besides, the editorial page blasts Cheney for his profanity and says that he should apologize. As if... :7
