1. According to what I heard on the TV, Hamas dug a tunnel under the base
and they packed it with explosives to blow up the base.

Cannot be viewed as anything but a legitimate act of war, in the current state of on-going hostilities between the two peoples.

5. Reminiscent of World War I tactics
Both sides did this. The British did it to spectacular effect in the Ypres salient. In fact, it is thought that one of the huge collections of explosives didn't go off, and is still buried there. I believe it is the original meaning of the term "undermined".

6. It Long Predates That, Sir
As long as there have been defensive walls, people have used the basic technique. Originally, the effect was gained by burning away the timbers holding up the tunnel roof, leading to subsidence due to the weight of earth and rock above. This was overtaken by gun-powder, and explosive effect, by the seventeenth century.

7. Interesting
I imagine most of these tricks go back a long way, as long as there is recorded history. I gather that the Romans were experts in all areas of military engineering. The Egyptians seemed to know a thing or two about engineering as well.
