Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said on Saturday that Britain, plagued for months by allegations its troops have abused prisoners in Iraq, would do everything possible to eliminate torture around the world.
“We vehemently oppose torture as a matter of fundamental principle,” Straw said at the launch of a campaign to pressure countries into signing and ratifying a UN protocol on torture.
“Torture is absolutely prohibited in international law and is to be condemned,” he said.
