Matt Maupin Killed in Iraq?
Just heard this on the radio -- UNCONFIRMED reports that "hostage" (yeah, he's in the Army but the war's over so he's not a POW) Matt Maupin has been killed.

I'm looking for a link.

No body found; video tape too grainy for a positive ID.

How sad; how terribly, terribly sad.

What, you don't believe what Shrub says?

Actually, Walt, I agree with you and I'm horrified that this poor young man wasn't classified as a POW.

There was a DU discussion about this a while back and his OFFICIAL classification is that of HOSTAGE.

23. I don't understand . . .
. . . how we can go into a country while screaming 'FIRE' and fuck it up major with 'SHOCKINAWE' . . . then just when we've pissed off everyone — things are at their most lethal and the war is in full swing . . . declare 'mission accomplished' and just hand the keys back over to the so-called original owners like we did them a HUGE favor. :grr: I don't get it. That would be like wrecking someone's car and then pretending that nothing had happened when you tried to return it.

10. Yeah, he's from the part of Ohio where I grew up.
He may well not have had a hope of college without the Army. Batavia's the county seat and it's really a pretty small town -- Milford, to the north, is actually a bigger place population and revenue-wise. Much of the money that went through Clermont County has moved off to the east and north by now -- Clermont County is one of those places that, but for a few blips, is always two ticks from recession. I don't know anything about his family, but I'd guess he didn't have a snowflake's chance of getting anywhere in life without serving at least one hitch in the military, and he probably felt he was doing something positive going in, to boot. That he's been held so long and the family has been encouraged to be hopeful kind of makes it twice as sad, though I know my first thought, driving through there after Abu Ghraib, was 'you guys can pray for Matt Maupin all you want, I don't imagine he's coming home.'

He was quoted (in the tape of his capture) as saying "I wanted to help liberate Iraq, but I did not come willingly, because I wanted to stay with my child."

12. "the war's over" yea right.
The "war" was never declared so there never was a "war".

This is why the Geneva convention should never have be
dismissed as quaint by the Bush junta.

It exists to protect our troops from this.

As is they may just declare the poor kid guile of violating local
laws.

It appears that beheading and amputation is popular with
our local buddies like the Saud's.

Tragic.

13. Happy Iraq Independence Day...
when an official statement is released by his captors, you can bet that his murder (and it's murder) will be tied to the fake "transfer of sovereignty" that took place this morning.

Fake Sovereignty. Real Tragedy.

I think the violence that took place in April is going to be considered a "lull" compared to what happens next.

When I heard of that Marine being held, I remarked on how no one has heard whatver happened to this guy Maupin.

It's as if there was a news blackout or something.

I really hope this news about Maupin's fate is false . . .

Just a poor friggin kid. Look at him. This horrible invasion is beyond tragic for all sides, except for the corporations whose greed will never be sated, and whose war profits have just begun to kick in. No matter how many lives are savaged and destroyed, the corporate war machine wins.

God, I feel so horrible for his family.

I leave for Washington on Thursday, and I think I'll make a stop in front of the White House to shake my fist at his decision to send Matt Maupin, and the tens of thousands of others, to Iraq.

I'm angrier than I've been in awhile.

28. Again, my heart breaks
I've been concerned for this soldier for months. Why didn't we do a "Saving Private Lynch" rescue to get him??? WHY, Mr President?!!!

This is an outrage and I thought I was at the point where I couldn't feel any angrier.

RIP, Private Maupin. And I hope your family finds comfort somehow.

Maybe the poster who was questioning the lack of coverage doesn't live anywhere near the Cincinnati metro area?

I've been disgusted at the lack of follow-up on this story.

35. Kick
Thankfully, DUers have been keeping Matt Maupin remembered during his captivity.

I have never been so pissed off in my life now. I am absolutely furious at the administration that caused this sensless death.

I seriously want to know how his capture was different from Jessica Lynch's. Why didn't we go in and film his "rescue"? Why did our government and the media forget all about him? I am at a loss to comprehend all this.

37. There Are No Divisions In Grief

Americans Mourn The Loss Of Spc. Keith M. Maupin

It seems left and right Americans never agree on anything. We fuss and argue, backbite and clamor about the state of the Nation and who's right or wrong. We climb over one another in the great roaring arena of free speech to be heard. In the middle of the din, a small report comes across the AP Wire, solemn and poignant: Spc. Keith Maupin, USMC has been killed. A hush falls over us all. In that moment, we are no longer left or right, we are no longer different races or creeds; in that galvanizing moment we are all simply Americans and we mourn one of our own.

All too often we didn't know him; we never shook his hand, never looked him in the eye, never knew where he lived. We only know what we needed to know: he was a fellow American. He was our brother.

Today I remember Spc. Keith Maupin and all the hostages who won't be returning to their families and friends. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family and to all the families who've had to deal with the extraordinary grief of losing a loved one. I ask you to take comfort in knowing you are in the hearts, minds and prayers of Americans everywhere.

Today all of America weeps for her fallen son.
