Historian finds U.K.-Al Capone link

EDINBURGH, Scotland, June 28 (UPI) -- A Scottish historian says one of London's most venerable liquor dealers may have supplied U.S. mobsters during the Prohibition.

George Rosie, author of "Curious Scotland -- Tales from a Hidden History," said Francis Berry, junior partner at Berry Brothers & Rudd during the time of Prohibition, went to Nassau in the Bahamas in 1920, where he struck up a deal with a seaman from Florida called Bill McCoy.

The deal called for the Berry Brothers to legally ship their Cutty Sark Whisky into the British colonial government's warehouses in the Bahamas. And they did: Exports of whisky to the Bahamas rose astonishingly during the period -- from 944 gallons in 1918 to more than 386,000 gallons in 1922.

From the Bahamas, the McCoy's schooner shipped the whisky to international waters off the New York and New Jersey coasts.
