Vienna - The former UN disarmament chief in Iraq, Hans Blix, suggested on Monday that the weapons inspection team which he headed in Iraq could be made into a permanent instrument of the UN Security Council.
The United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (Unmovic), was created in 1999 to oversee the disarmament of Iraq but has been on standby since pulling out of Iraq in March last year.
"Perhaps Unmovic, with a somewhat modified mandate and with a small core staff and a roster of trained inspectors, could become a permanent relatively low-cost instrument for the Security Council," Blix suggested during a conference at the diplomatic academy in Vienna.
