DUBAI (Reuters) - A group led by suspected al Qaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has freed three Turkish hostages it kidnapped this week and threatened to behead, Al Jazeera television said on Tuesday.

"Jama'at al-Tawhid and Jihad announces the release of the Turkish hostages for the sake of Muslims in Turkey and their demonstrations against (U.S. President George W.) Bush," a masked man said on a video recording aired by Jazeera.

This may bode well for the captured US Marine, who is also Muslim...

1. They were freed because the company they worked for
agreed to stop doing business in Iraq.

I don't hold out the same hope for our Marine.

2. Why are they taking hostages?
They wanna win the PR game... stop kidnapping and killing hostages. The US is doing a fine job of fucking itself anyways. Why tarnish their image anyway? Never has made sense to me why these groups are doing this now.

3. Hostage taking is a given in a battle like this.
However, the beheadings are most likely anti-insurgent psyops.

4. So the "insurgents" kidnap them and then hand them over to the
anti-insurgent psyops for beheading??

5. Who knows? However, the beheading images themselves are
a lot more likely to be psyop propaganda than insurgents discrediting themselves.

7. How is beheading discrediting the "insurgents"?
All tactics are fair game in the defense of your country. Is there some reason you think the rest of the Iraqis would see this otherwise?
Those are the only people who they could be discredited to.

8. Iraq was a progressive, secular country compared to Saudi Arabia.
Beheadings don't endear.

9. I'm new here
and that's the strangest thing I've read so far. Do you have proof of this?

11. Do you have proof that insurgents are performing these beheadings?
What makes you think Muslim/Islamic insurgents are beheading people in Iraq?

13. I'd go with the video and the way Al Jazeera.
and known Islamic terrorist websites promote such acts.

Sorry, the only time I've ever heard of psyops was in the tv show Babylon 5. That's not a dig at you my friend, but I can't rationalize that theory.

14. Psychological operations have a long and storied history.

Meanwhile, the "terra'ists" in the Berg video were wrapped up head to toe. Only the hands were showing and some of the hands looked whiter than Berg.

Which "known Islamic terrorist websites" promote beheading civilians?

6. This has more to do with the Muslim Brotherhood than anything else.
The beheading thing goes all the way back to the start of Islam when Mohammed showed great leniency for those he conquered in battle, who accepted him as the final Prophet. He was not so compassionate with the Jews living in Medina ,who refused to reject the Torah and accept him as the Prophet. The angel Gabriel told him to put to death anyone who did not accept the message ,so the entire community of Jews- the Banu Qurayah - was beheaded. There were 300 to 400 of them. Here is where you have the start of the animosity between the two groups and another example of ritual beheading. Not all muslims are like this. In fact, generally, It is only the Wahabi sect who follow the Hanbali school of thought that are promoting the killings---but it is spreading as more muslims feel that their religion and territories are being threatened by the West. It would be fair to say that fundamental Wahabism represents Islam about like the KKK represents Christianity.

10. Executions
If the "insurgents" &/or Al Q. associated quit executing their captives, I feel that they will be better off with their PR in Iraq and America. What should these groups do with captured non-Iraqis &/or American citizen &/or troops?
