Parole Board votes to stop execution
Recommendation to spare the life of convicted murderer Darnell Williams now goes to Gov. Kernan.

The Indiana Parole Board recommended today that Gov. Joe Kernan halt the execution of Death Row inmate Darnell Williams.

The panel voted unanimously to grant Williams' request to have his sentence commuted to life in prison without parole. It is the first time the board has recommended clemency in a capital case since the death penalty was reinstated in 1977.

Williams faces execution July 9 for the 1986 murder of John and Henrietta Rease in their Gary home. He maintains his innocence.

There should be no doubt before anyone is executed for a crime, said Valerie Parker, Parole Board member. "There are too many unanswered questions," Parker said.

Right there is the #1 reason for 100% abolition of the death penalty. Executing even one innocent person it too many for me.
