'Fahrenheit 9/11' sets record (in Fayetteville, military town)
Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 05:25 PM by kskiska
"Fahrenheit 9/11," a left-sided documentary that bashes the Bush administration's war on terrorism, wouldn't find much of an audience in a military town.

Or so they thought.

"This has broken all of our past records," said Nasim Kuenzel, an owner of the Cameo Art House Theatre. "The movie that I thought would make us hardly any money - I never thought it would break all the records."

(snip)

Saturday and Sunday were just as busy, Kuenzel said, with nearly 1,000 tickets sold over the weekend. As many as 75 percent of moviegoers were soldiers or military families, Kuenzel said.

Many were like Natalie Sorton. She is 25 and married to an infantryman who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. "I want to see what my husband is fighting for," Sorton said Monday before going into the theater with a friend, Kathy Norris.

2. So far it is not showing in Oceanside
home of Camp Pendleton Marine Base. However, the surrounding towns are showing it. I think these theaters that aren't showing it will realize the mistake they made.

3. sorton's statements are interesting
Before watching the movie --

"I think it's going to open my eyes a little, and that worries me," Sorton said before taking her seat.

After watching the movie --

After Monday's showing, Sorton emerged with a grim face. She said she plans to buy the film on DVD and give it to everyone she knows.

"I'm disgusted," she said. "Disgusted."

The film changed her opinions on the war in Iraq by convincing her that oil and corporate interests were behind decision-making,

9. "I think it's going to open my eyes a little, and that worries me,"
That's what we're up against. There are too many people who are afraid of having their fantasies of what America is shattered. They are WORRIED that things might be less that perfect. They are afraid of not being the beacon of freedom and democracy.

They want to be lied to, even if the lies make no sense, because they feel like their self image is on the line. I think there is too much nationalism in this country and has been for a very long time.

10. That's the beauty of Hollywood
It sucks the people into the theater against their usual desire to not pay attention to the world & WHAMMO -- Moore gets them right where he wants to.

26. True
And it looks like what she was worried about has come true, and it wasn't bad at all. Another one for our side.

I wonder if MM could get a bunch of blimps and fly them all over the country playing the movie on their side?

5. great news
We need more military families to see this. While military families are making sacrifices and suffering losses, bu$h and his cronies are out on vacation, ripping off the taxpayer and pandering to their "have and have more" political base.

Wake up America. We are at war, but instead of fighting for democracy in Iraq, you need to fight for it right here in America. Vote them out!

From the article:

"I'm not pleased at all about the way things are going" with the war, Barnes said. "I trust Michael Moore. He can be out there a bit, but he's for the common man.""

17. Yup, here in Richmond too
I tried to go see Fahrenheit 911 this last Monday night and it was sold out, so I will try again on Wednesday. Richmond, Va is a very conservative town. We will hold our first significant anti war demonstration this coming Saturday, but there were a few 'support our troops' rallies a year ago. So there seems to be a shift in mood here too.

Thank you, Micheal Moore.

Loved the article... here's my favorite part:

"I think this is definitely going to have an impact on the election. I'm glad I'm a voter." And this from a republican.

It's too sad to laugh or gloat, but I'm smiling inside.

20. Freeps!
This is great. A few days ago, Moore said he sold out in Fayetteville. The Freepers "debunked" him by proving that F 9/11 was only showing in one "artsy-fartsy" theater.

This is the one! LOL. They are so stupid it hurts.

They refused to believe that military families would even attend this theatre. They listed every theatre in the area and pinpointed this one. They still don't want to believe it.

22. Just got the news! It's coming to Las Cruces, NM!!!! near White Sands
Missile Range...lots of vets here.

Allen Theaters skipped it and our little local independent, the Fountain Theater (foreign films, mostly), was going to get it in Sept. But......it starts FRIDAY for 2 weeks! I figure at about 200 a show, with 12 shows a week....that's nearly 5000 of us who won't have to drive to the one theater in El Paso!!

27. WOW !! Read these quotes!
>>>>Almost all the crowds at the Cameo have applauded the film at the end, with some people giving standing ovations, Kuenzel said. Many have tears in their eyes as they leave the theater.

"I think it's going to open my eyes a little, and that worries me," Sorton said before taking her seat.

Lea Barnes, a Republican, seemed giddy as she and a friend bought tickets Monday.

31. Did you read what Sorten said after she saw the film?
(snip)
After Monday's showing, Sorton emerged with a grim face. She said she plans to buy the film on DVD and give it to everyone she knows.

"I'm disgusted," she said. "Disgusted."

The film changed her opinions on the war in Iraq by convincing her that oil and corporate interests were behind decision-making, she said. Worries over whether Moore would vilify soldiers were unfounded.

"I don't think they portrayed them as bad," she said. "I don't think it portrayed them as not doing their jobs. It showed them doing what they're told.

"All this movie did was open my eyes a little more to what's really going on," she said. "I think this is definitely going to have an impact on the election. I'm glad I'm a voter."
(snip)

Thanks MM!

30. F-9/11 #1 in conservative San Diego County
Also #1 nationwide, according to today's San Diego Tribune.

It set a weekend box office record for documentaries in San Diego with $341,974 worth of tickets sold in only 11 theaters (that's over $30K/theater). It also beat out #2, "White Chick", which showed in 22 theaters in San Diego, earning $274,753.

32. $$$
The average per screen take is over $25,000. That's twice the take of the closest Hollywood release. Any theater owner who turned down the film is eating his shorts right now. Maybe the next time a wing nut group calls on theater owners to pass on a release they'll slam the door right in their ugly, smug faces. (movie theater's lose money for the most part because of saturation)

34. 'Fahrenheit 9/11' Liberty Hall's hottest movie ticket ever (Kansas)
By Jennifer Byrd, Lawrence Journal-World
Thursday, July 1, 2004
<snip>
By about 10:30 a.m., nearly 50 people were waiting in line for the box office to open. An hour later, 200 tickets had been sold, said Liberty Hall manager Rob Fitzgerald.

Both the 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. showings set new box office records at the theater, projectionist Aaron Emerson said later Wednesday night. A total of 330 people attended the first show and 375 people saw the second show, he said.

"Our old record was 215 for a reissue a few years ago of ‘Pulp Fiction,'" Emerson said.

Before the 9 p.m. show the line from the box office packed the sidewalk from the theater building to the curb and down Seventh Street to the east.
