Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC) no longer wants the draft reinstated
http://www.thehill.com/news/063004/norton.aspx

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) has withdrawn her support of legislation that would reinstate the military draft, because she believes it would bolster the Bush administration’s ability to wage several wars simultaneously.

Norton initially backed Rep. Charles Rangel’s (D-N.Y.) bill on the draft in January 2003. But a Norton spokeswoman said the legislator now believes the bill, if enacted, would force draftees to fight wars they might not support. The spokeswoman added that a draft would help President Bush’s “preemptive” war on terrorism.

Rangel said last year that he introduced the bill to highlight the large percentage of minorities who are enlisted. He said at the time, “For those who say the poor fight better, I say give the rich a chance.”

Norton was pleased that the Rangel bill “got that debate going,” her spokeswoman said.

1. I would think that having the draft
"re-instated" would draw people's attention to the Real news that the Europeons are getting..and shake this war machine government up.

It seems like bush is going to exhaust our military and there won't be any protection if there is a Real enemy.

5. It would be a Republican draft
Not the Rangel bill. They would write the law so that the sons of the well to do did not have to serve. Nor would women serve: the religious right never much liked the idea of women in the military.
