Then, this past Saturday me and the crew took our yearly trip to the Mermaid Day Parade in Coney Island. There were literally hundreds of people wearing anti-Bush shirts and hats (well, it ain't exactly his constituency anyway), and tons of kids registering people to vote. One guy, about 45, is walking past us with a clipboard, but he's doing some marketing survey. So when somebody asks him if he's registering people to vote, he says "You gotta go over there to vote," pointing across the parade route. "We're gonna vote alright," I says to him I says, "We're gonna vote that asshole right outta the White House, believe that." So the guy turns and looks at me and says "We gotta let him win the war first." "War," I says, "What war?" So he says to me he says "The war on terror." People start laughing around us. "When's he gonna get around to start fighting it?" I practically screams at 'im I screams (I'm fairly full of Rheingold at this point, mind you), and everybody in hearing distance breaks out laughing, then yelling "Fuck Bush," "Bush is Incompetent," and - my personal favorite - "Fucking fake ass war on terror" (uttered in a loud voice by an 80-something year old woman with a cane, a chihuaha and a hat that says "FLIRTY." No lie, G.I. The guys slunk away without another word, clearly stunned at the reaction. Point being:
