Complaint filed against Hastings

A complaint has been filed with the Florida Elections Commission against U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, and other elected officials, alleging they collected donations to produce and distribute a voter guide through an unregistered political organization in the November 2002 general election.

The complaint, filed by Alan Brown, alleges that the organization referred to as ''The Black Elected Officials of Broward County'' and/or the ''Democratic Black Caucus of Broward County'' was not registered as a federal or state political organization. It was organized by Hastings and his chief of staff, Art Kennedy, according to the complaint.

It was not clear who Alan Brown is and what his affiliation is with Hastings. Brown could not be reached late Monday for comment.

The complaint goes on to say political officials collected donations to distribute a ''Black Voter Guide'' through the organization.

Hastings said Monday he was not aware of the complaint. ''When I see whatever it is you are talking about, I will offer a comment,'' he said.
