WP:Chalabi,Shunted,Shares Iraq Playbook (explosive info?)
Chalabi, Shunted to Sidelines, Shares His Playbook for Iraq
Party Leader Emphasizes Elections, Shaking Off U.S. Tutelage
By Edward Cody
Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, June 30, 2004; Page A12

(Note: These comments by Chalabi, whose reputation is far from stellar, are deep within the page-12 article, but I thought they were of particular interest.)

....A good place to start (excercising power by the new government), Chalabi suggested, would be with the new Iraqi National Intelligence Service set up by the CIA to replace Hussein's much-feared services. The new intelligence apparatus, hundreds strong, was organized in secret without a known budget or statute, he said.

The director, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Abdullah Shahwani, was recruited by the CIA station in the Jordanian capital Amman after he fled Iraq in 1991, Chalabi said, and has been a favorite ever since. A member of Iraq's Turkmen minority, Shahwani reports directly to the prime minister but is closely supervised by CIA officers, Chalabi added. Under their guidance, the service has turned much of its focus toward neighboring Iran, he said.

According to a report prepared in April by knowledgeable officials for members of the now-disbanded Governing Council, the service roster is two-thirds Sunni Muslim and one-fourth Shiite in a country that is about 60 percent Shiite, giving rise to fears that the new service has incorporated many former members of Hussein's Sunni-dominated services.

"This won't fly here," Chalabi said....

***

Next, Chalabi said, the new government should grab control of the country's finances. Specifically, he said, it should demand a full accounting of how (Paul) Bremer, who had check-signing authority, spent funds from the Development Fund for Iraq, a pool of cash from Iraqi oil sales designated to pay for reconstruction....

2. Chalabi will win.
He comes from one of the wealthiest families in Iraq and he knows how to play the game of greasing the palms. People of power usually manage to stay in power or come back after they have lost it. He and his fellow powermongers were handpicked by American powermongers. Unless the non-wealthy of Iraq have a massive uprising the US Puppet Regime and the Multi-Corps will rule rule Iraq.

3. Is Chalabi about to be another one of our "boys" gone bad?
This is getting more interesting by the day. In addition, lots more dangerous to us all. At one point in time the world is going to be fed up with Bush & Sons Inc and the control they exert and the wars they feed for profit. (The Inc part is all the rest of the global elite, go get your tin foil and sleep in it).

5. What we have our heads wrapped in is not enough, we are looking to
start a co-op for like minded individuals. (Just kidding, of course, not). And "Interesting" just really doesn't even come close, does it? I'm quite certain your head can not be large enough for the tin foil you have been using to cover yourself in. (Thank god for humor or else where would we all be?!) Let us know if you want in on the "tin foil co-op". PM's are good unless the internet goes "poof". Connect now with all DU'ers. 7. Click on the link and listen to an Iraqi woman who says that
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 08:44 AM by tlcandie
the new government is no different than Saddam! She's very distraught about how the women will be nothing more than symbols. Very interesting to hear her speak.

Also, the man whose camera caught a lot of the scenes in Michael Moore's new documentary is on here as well! I believe he had a lot of things to share, but he was cut short :/ He seemed EXTREMELY distraught by what he had witnessed in Iraq.

OH, fast forward to: Iraqis On Handover of Sovereignty: "We Do Not Approve This Political Formula to Oppress Us"

15. Chalabi also implies Bremer misused reconstruction funds:

Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 02:55 PM by jpak
Why does a "free" and "sovereign " I-raq need a 3 billion dollar CIA run secret police????

Cuz I-raq is neither free or sovereign....

...and the Bushies need these thugs to protect their ill gotten petroleum investments.

11. PHOTOS of CHALABI at the Iraq 'hand-over' ceremony...
only a very few 'special' people were 'secretly invited' to attend...and they had to enter the American Green Zone through heavy heavy security for this brief ceremony...:wtf:

IMO, Allawi will soon be assassinated, and the pentagoon will put chalabi in charge...which was always their plan...chalabi...America's NEW and improved saddam hussein...

12. That was a good two or three weeks ago
Bush has forgiven Chalabi - it was all a misunderstanding.

Seriously, though, you have to wonder if Chalabi has something on the BFEE.

IRAQI’S GOVERNING COUNCIL GRANTS ITSELF NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE
Most members gain seats of power in new government

By Annia Ciezadlo
Special to The Daily Star

BAGHDAD: When the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council dissolved itself on June 1 - a month ahead of schedule - it seemed like it was all over for a body that Iraqis widely viewed as too close to the United States.

The future seemed especially dim for Ahmed Chalabi, whose office was raided only days earlier by US and Iraqi security forces investigating charges of kidnapping, corruption and robbery.

SNIP

"Essentially, the Iraqi Governing Council seems to have granted itself life after death," said Nathan Brown, a professor of political science at George Washington University in Washington. As political players jockey for positions in the government, the selection process is being dominated by members of the former Governing Council - much to the chagrin of Iraqis who had hoped for a more homegrown leadership to emerge.

"There are very important and gifted and honest Iraqi personalities who up until now have been distanced from the new government," said Jawadat al-Obeidi, secretary-general of the Iraqi Democratic Congress, an umbrella group of 216 Iraqi political parties.

SNIP

In July, a national conference of about 1,000 people will meet. Modeled on Afghanistan's Loya Jirga, the conference will include people from all walks of life - tribal chiefs, women's groups, youth organizations, writers, poets and artists - who will choose the Interim National Council.

However, the conference is being planned by yet another body, the Supreme Commission. This commission, which will decide who attends the July conference, was supposed to include a broad range of people, including those chosen by UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi to represent Iraqis outside the former Governing Council.

But the Supreme Commission has been dominated by former Governing Council members from the start: It was selected by a five-member committee, now disbanded, consisting of four former Governing Council members, including Chalabi, and chaired by the deputy of Jalal Talabani, another former council member.

16. Wanted to add Chalabi's relishing Bremer/Senor "hasty exit" --
"Ahmed Chalabi smiled contentedly at the thought. L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator who ran Iraq like a viceroy for more than a year, was reduced to a hasty exit with a stealthy helicopter ride to the airport, seen off without fanfare by no one higher-ranking than a deputy prime minister.

'Bremer put his hand in his pocket and went to the airport ignominiously,' Chalabi chortled Tuesday, the day after Bremer's departure. 'And Dan Senor with him,' he added, referring to Bremer's spokesman, who had denigrated Chalabi on television.

In essence, Chalabi was saying, Bremer is now gone, Senor is now gone and Ahmed Chalabi is not...."
