Taliban say hold woman, Australian reporter missing

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 30 (Reuters) - The Taliban said it had captured a foreign woman and an Afghan man after officials reported an Australian journalist and her Afghan assistant and driver missing in an area where the guerrillas are active.

"My colleagues have informed me that they are holding a foreign woman and an Afghan man, but I don't know whether that woman is a journalist or not," Taliban spokesman Hamid Agha told Reuters on Wednesday. He gave no other details.

Jalani Khan, head of security in Zabul province, said he had received an intelligence report that a vehicle used by Carmela Baranowska of Australia's SBS Television had broken down on the main road between the towns of Girishk and Kandahar.

"According to the report, this lady's vehicle broke down between Girishk and Kandahar, but I don't know whether she has been kidnapped or has left that area," he said earlier.

5. A fate worse than death
She could do worse than the Taliban. If the Northern Alliance got her, they'd rape her to death. Not for political reasons; they just like to rape. There was a British reporter in Afghanistan last year who was saved by her translator when the men she went to interview planed on raping her later that evening. The translator got her out of the camp before anything happened, but I'm sure she's the exception, not the rule.
