Iraqis given custody of Saddam
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/06/30/iraq.saddam/index.html

"BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Deposed leader Saddam Hussein is to appear in court Thursday after Iraq's interim government took legal custody of him.

The U.S.-led coalition transferred Saddam and 11 other high profile members of his former regime to Iraqi authorities on Wednesday.

After the transfer, which took place Wednesday morning, Saddam looked visibly shaken, Salem Chalabi, executive director of the Special Iraqi Tribunal said.

Saddam and his aides are no longer prisoners of war, although they will physically remain in coalition military hands until the Iraqi security apparatus is ready to hold them."

1. Since his lawyer's have had no idea where he is and have had zero
access to him, how can they be ready for any kind of trial or pre-trial hearing not knowing what the charges will be as well?

12. Bush misleads on transfer of Power - Iraq Courts not obeyed -but CNN says
Bush misleads on transfer of Power - Iraq Courts not obeyed -but CNN says nada

Speaking at the NATO conference in Turkey yesterday, President Bush said, "15 months after the liberation of Iraq...the world witnessed the arrival of a free and sovereign Iraqi government." <1> The reality, however, is much different.

The same day that U.S. administrator Paul Bremer officially ended the occupation, U.S. prosecutors refused to abide by an Iraqi judge's order acquitting Iraqi citizen Iyad Akmush Kanum of attempted murder of coalition troops. <2> Instead, the prosecutors returned Kanum to the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, claiming that "they were not bound by Iraqi law."

In the days leading up to his departure, Bremer "issued a raft of edicts" in an effort to "exert U.S. control over the country after the transfer of political authority."<3> Specifically, Bremer empowered a seven-member appointed commission "to disqualify political parties and any of the candidates they support." Bremer also "appointed Iraqis handpicked by his aides to influential positions in the interim government" with multi-year terms to "promote his concepts of governance" after the handover.

Iraq remains plagued by violence and "the primary military responsibility for fighting the insurgency remains as much in American hands as it did yesterday."<4> As a result, the New York Times concludes it is "ludicrous for administration officials to suggest that America's occupation of Iraq has now somehow ended."

Meanwhile Bush/Coalition spokesperson Dan Senor Visits CNN "American Morning"and lies - and CNN says nothing. On CNN, Senor argued Saddam Hussein's legal handover was more than symbolism for the Iraqi people. "The Iraqis will be in charge of the legal proceedings. The Iraqi judges , Iraqi prosecutors, the tribunal established by the Iraqi council was the first act the Iraqi council took last July after they were formed," -And CNN fails to note BUSH military saying Iraq Courts have no power over Iraqis held by military.

14. Freedom reigns.
Ths "new" Iraqi Govt. is the same as the "old" one except that now, Negroponte is is charge instead of Bremmer. The mainstream Iraqis know what colonialism is and that's what they have now. How long will it be before there is a mass uprising against it?

16. "Saddam and his aides are no longer prisoners of war"...
because they have been handed over to the Iraqis? Is this a test to see how Rummy can get around the Geneva Convention? Next they'll be sending the prisoners from Gitmo into 'Iraqi custody'.
