Janet Jackson Breast Flash May Get $550,000 Fine
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&e=8&u=/nm/20040630/ts_nm/media_indecency_jackson_dc

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Twenty television stations that aired pop singer Janet Jackson's infamous breast flash during the Super Bowl should be fined $27,500 each, according to a staff recommendation to U.S. regulators, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

<snip>
I still don't get all the commotion about this. I mean really. If a kid was sitting 1 foot away from a 120 inch screen, staring directly at Janet's boob for the entire 1 second incident, he would've seen her silver nipple ring maybe. There's no way he could even have discerned whether he had seen a nipple or not. I saw much worse watching Monty Python reruns on PBS.

And why are the stations responsible? If they wanna fine someone, fine her or Justin.

2. Not only that, but as the owner of a pair of breasts I mind that they
are classified as something obscene. What is obscene is what Michael Savage says on the radio. Or what Limbaugh yells during his program. Or movies that show violence that is totally gratuitous. Or an unjustified war, maybe?

Since when is a totally normal and functional part of a woman's anatomy considered obscene?

Prudish hypocrites. No wonder so many women have body issues.

3. This is almost as bad as
Over lunch, I was watching a commerical on a local TV station. It was some health organization (in ky) emphasizing the need to use sun screen at all times on your loved ones.

The loved one in this particular commerical was a 2-3 year old girl running around on the beach .... totally naked. There was no frontal shots, but given how puritan the RW has become, isn't that just as bad as seeing a boob bare a boob?

6. what timing/stern's press conference.
for non-howard fans (i accept you anyway), howard had a press conference this morning announcing that he is returning to most of the lost clearchannel stations and adding some other markets--despite the weight of the fcc. he blasted the bush admin over the war, corporate scandals, and the "decency" bills. he pointed out that he seems to be the only one being held responsible for janet jacksons desperate bid for attention and that no one has been fined for the breast baring.strangely enough, he has been fined for 4 seperate violations going back to 2000 (since he became vocally anti-bush. they are not fining him for current violations).

this yahoo story was posted 2 hours ago. i guess the fcc and michael powell were listening to howard this morning. i guess they are the invisible stern listeners who won't admit it.

i imagine them sitting around saying, "he's making too much sense. fine janet jackson...quickly."

love or hate stern, it looks like he got their attention and is poking some soft spots.

He's their worst fucking nightmare. He's a free speech torpedo whose listeners are white males 18-54, IOW, Bush's base.

Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 02:23 PM by mzmolly
less about whether Ms. Jackson's alter ego *strawberry* faces a fine for her exposed sagging anatomy.

I don't think breasts are *erotic* personally, but I hate to see her become the poster child for censorship.

What she did was stupid, not artful, not meaningful and frankly nauseating. :puke:

Call me a prude.

Not trying to chasten you for sharing Bill  I think the whole situation is simply ridiculous. :hi:

13. i don't care about the saggy boob either....
i'd like to fine them all for lack of artistic integrity.

i disagree that this isn't a significant issue. this is just another example of an administration gone mad. they are using this shady notion of "decency" to spread their religous agenda, completely ignoring the fact that the general public was not outraged by this. the fcc does nothing but squander public funds, while the chairman flies around collecting pics of himself with celebrities and posting them on a website. is he the head of the office that deals with one of our primary rights (free speech) or some lame scrapbooker.

not to sound like a rabid stern fan, but the fcc has used this "decency" issue to try and supress stern's criticism of bush. they have crafted these "decency" fines so they can applied arbitrarily and are using it to silence dissent. why was this released with in hours of sterns press conference this morning? trying to take the edge off sterns rant this morning, maybe. our reps, repub and dems alike, should be ashamed for allowing this trampling of our rights. the fact that this bill was voted for 99-1 (i may be wrong on this) is a shame. brownbach slipped this crap into a defense bill to get it passed. rightwing, christian, conservatives are taking away our rights, one at a time, while crafting our gov't to suit their agendas.

poo-poo stern (nice pun, huh?) if you want. ignore janet jackson (i think that's been done by a majority of us), but don't think that this is any less treacherous than the rest of what this admin is up to.

21. Who's the *general public* ?
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 04:38 PM by mzmolly
As I said, boobs don't offend me personally, but it was not appropriate for a family show. I think, regardless of the fact that she covered her nip with a breast pin, we have to draw a line somewhere. I think she should pay a price. I dont think the stations should have to pay however, unless they were aware in advance.

A bit off topic, but I find it ironic that nursing mothers who are asked to leave public establishments get less outcry then Janet Jackson does for her poor judgement?

I guess I believe in censorship to a degree. I don't want my kid to turn on the tele and see tits and ass and/or gratuitous violence for that matter. I agree with having a time and place for certain kinds of media.

Stern is another story, his show *albeit obnoxious* is not a family show, thus he should be free to broadcast anywhere at anytime. The radio is a different medium. *again, just my opinion*

Let's choose our battles carefully folks.

The right wing loves when we take the bait, I wont take up the battlecry for Janet's tit-cident and be called a porn peddler who's trying to *ruin* family values. :eyes:

15. Where's the justice?
Why is Ms. Jackson (sorry, I'm NASTY!) taking all the heat for this, I mean it WAS Justin Timberlake who ripped that part of her outfit off, causing the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" and yet, he got nothing. No bad press, nothing. Fuckin' double standard...

Is cabal rebelling a little for not getting their fair share of love from the Mass(insane)media they are bed with.

Or is just as it appears, trying to give  on on something they fear and cannot control?

18. Fight it
I can only hope that the twenty stations involved fight this as hard as they can right through the election. Unfortunately, they'll probably roll over for their Repug masters and thank them for showing them the error of their ways.
