WASHINGTON, June 30 (UPI) -- The Bush administration began circulating Wednesday a draft resolution at the United Nations on Sudan, calling for sanctions against government-backed Arab militia who have been accused of attacking African villages in the western Drafur region.
The move comes as U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's visit to the country seemed to yield some results on Darfur from the Khartoum government.
At the U.S. State Department in Washington, deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said the draft resolution, Powell's visit to Darfur and his meetings with Sudanese officials should not be linked.
"This is part of a broad campaign that has a variety of aspects to it, both bilateral and international, to bring about a peaceful resolution of the situation in Darfur," he told reporters. "It is something that has been under discussion for some time. I wouldn't look at it as a direct outgrowth of the secretary's meetings that he's been having today and yesterday in Darfur. I would look at it as a companion piece to that; as part of a tapestry."
