Edwards Has a Record of Overachieving
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&ncid=703&e=3&u=/ap/20040707/ap_on_el_pr/edwards_profile

When John Edwards (news - web sites) showed up in Chapel Hill, N.C., to start law school, classmate David Huffine thought of him as "just like all the rest of us — a good ol' boy" from the rural South, a decent student, an athlete, a nice guy with whom to hang around.

"It took us a while to realize how bright he was," remembers Huffine. "The first year, we all struggled with law school. But certainly beginning his second and on into his third year, he did exceptionally well."

From there, Edwards' trajectory never wavered: the standout law student became a stunningly successful lawyer, then vaulted from nowhere politically into the U.S. Senate and now onto a national presidential ticket, less than six years after his first election to anything.

"I'm not afraid," Edwards says of his almost-audacious willingness to set his sights high, even when the odds seem set against him.

5. Oh my Gawd!

An overachiever. Seems like you just can't get rewarded for real achievement anymore. It's easier and more American to have the rewards handed to you, right, Georgie, while you're putting away that last line on the mirror.

9. I don't like the term "overachiever". Why not just call him
a "high achiever"? "Over" implies he's done something too much, or that he's succeeded beyond what limited ability should allowed. It's as if the journalist really doesn't want to give him credit.

I see nothing to suggest this man has limited ability, and you can't be too good at what you are doing.

11. Yes, well, I was reacting to the original note, overachiever, and whatnot.

It's not like I agreed with the opinion.

He EARNED it  No neglecting father who handed him any goodies like a free pass into TANG, no elie Ivy League with gentleman's Cs handed out like candy, just hard work, pride, and respect for his fellow man and woman.

13. The next Big Dawg?
Praised by James Carville as the best stump speaker he's ever seen - better than the Big Dawg himself.

Is what we have here the next incarnation of The Big Dawg? I think so. :)
