Enron Ex-Chief Lay Indicted, to Surrender - Thurs AM
July 7, 2004

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Former Enron Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Kenneth Lay, who grew the company into an energy trading giant that became the ultimate symbol of corporate wrongdoing and greed, was indicted on Wednesday and said he would surrender to authorities.

Lay said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon he had been indicted and would surrender on Thursday morning. Sources earlier said a federal grand jury returned a sealed indictment with undisclosed criminal charges for Lay's actions before the company fell into bankruptcy in December 2001.

3. Fantastic Timing!!!
The small town lawyer who looks out for the little guy against greedy corporations, just joined up w/ Kerry!

Imagine this in the debates: "Mr. Cheney, did Ken Lay, convicted Enron criminal, attend your energy meetings? Mr. Cheney, the American people deserve to know! Open the records!"

6. Shrub has already pretended not to know him,
when Enron fell apart, and even the "liberal media" back then didn't buy it, and brought out the evidence of Kenny Boy's longstanding relationship with Shrubbie McCokeSpoone.

This is AWESOME news!!

I hope you get the rest of your life in jail to contemplate your evil shenannigans, you Cheneying criminal!

7. A horrible thought just struck me..
.. could Dubya give him a presidential pardon? IIRC, there is no limit as to who can be given such a pardon, so I wouldn't rule this out. Hell, Dubya has already screwed the public so much, one more for the Gipper won't hurt.

8. I've had the same thought!!
But hopefully, it will be a long, drawn out process and he won't be convicted until after January 2005!! I don't think w* can pardon someone who hasn't been convicted.

11. When did rules ever stop W
from doing whatever he wants?

He can probably issue some kind of blanket pardon, even if someone hasn't been convicted, yet. That's what Ford did for Nixon.

12. No, you can pre-emptive pardon
Ford did it for Nixon.

I think Clinton also did it for that guy that pissed off the repubs so much, and that Clinton says now he wished he hadn't pardoned him because of all the grief its caused him. That guy was never convicted of anything (though charged, yes), IIRC, and Clinton's pardon allowed him back into the country without fear of being taken to trial. I could be wrong on that one.

But I'm totally sure that Ford pardoned Nixon pre-emptively, since Nixon was never even charged of anything.

21. Of course. That's a foregone conclusion, imho.

17. Here's another link with a little poll at the end.....
Former Enron CEO Ken Lay Indicted

http://www.click2houston.com/money/3503262/detail.html

<snip>In an exclusive News2Houston Flashpoll, SurveyUSA asked approximately 500 Houstonians if they think Ken Lay did anything wrong connected to Enron's collapse.

Eighty-five percent said they believe he did, while 7 percent said he didn't.

Another 7 percent were not sure.
<snip>

Wow! Prez pardon or big time plea deal, looks to me like with 85% of his homies sure he's guilty!

19. He has the option of surrendering
Anyone else would have their door broke down if they didn't surrender when the cops came to the door to arrest them.

20. News trucks camped in front Fed. Court House
I was downtown tonight and saw a couple dozen news trucks parked in front of or next to the Federal Court House. I saw one or two CNN trucks and news trucks from all over Texas.

It will be a fun perp walk tomorrow
