Caricom team for Haiti next week

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada - Five foreign ministers from the Caribbean Community (Caricom) are expected to meet early next week with members of the interim Haitian administration to discuss conditions for the return of the French-speaking country to the Community.

The delegation, to be headed by the Foreign Minister of Barbados Dame Billie Miller, current chairperson of the Caricom Council for Foreign and Community Relations, will include the foreign ministers of Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda and The Bahamas.

Depending on the report from the ministerial "fact-finding" mission, the Caricom leaders will decide on the timing of the admission to the councils of the Community by the interim Haitian regime, pending the restoration of constitutional governance with fresh elections in 2005.

A statement on Haiti, reflecting one of the more significant issues addressed at the 25th annual Caricom Summit that concluded here last night, was to be issued along with an end-of-conference communiqué.

Caricom gives Suriname the nod

ST GEORGE'S Grenada - Caribbean Community leaders have given their unanimous endorsement to the candidature of Surinamese envoy Albert Ramdin for election as deputy secretary-general of the Organisation of American States (OAS).

Ramdin, who has been personal assistant to outgoing OAS secretary-general Cesar Gaviria, is a former Caricom assistant secretary-general for community and foreign relations.

The 58 year-old Ramdin, who left Grenada yesterday ahead of the closing session of the four-day 25th Caricom Summit, said he was pleased for his country, the Caribbean Community and himself that such an endorsement had been given.

He said he was committed to doing his best to strengthen Caricom/OAS relations and promote shared major goals on issues of democracy and hemispheric security and development.
